Project Summary
Our project Neither Place nor Time Sets us Apart was focused on searching for similarites between the countries we shared a part of our history with. We looked back at what the generation of our grandparents had in common but also whether these things are still preserved and we could still see the similarites in our every day life. Our topic included the childhood of our grandmothers and grandfathers, their school life, family life and the traditions accompanying various periods in their lives.
Another important aim was to get the older generation involved in the project and remind their grandchildren of what interesting or unexpected they may get to know by only spending their time with their grandparents, listening to their memories.
There were five participants, Epreskerti Általános Iskola (Hungary), Istituto comprensivo di Occhiobello (Italy), ZS Zamutov (Slovakia), Siguldas 1. pamatskola (Latvia) and Zakladni skola a Materska skola Kunstat, prispevkova organizace (Czech Republic). All the schools provide primary education, focus on using foreign languages and are interested in involving the pupils and their grandparents in international projects.
In each country there was a meeting where we not only presented what we had found out about our partners and the older generation but we also worked together on particular tasks. These activities involved choosing a stamp we then used to confirm we had completed particular tasks, finding out which recipes are called after our partners´ countries or asking our grandparents about their Christmas time memories. We also sent each other a Christmas greeting with a fairy tale taking place in one of our partners´ countries, sang a carrol we ale knew or designed a calendar looking back at 1960s. We also presented our Easter traditions and made an international Easter egg. We asked our grandparents about their childhood and most interesting hobbies and taught them some of ours. We finished our work with a wedding magazine and presentations on a typical wedding day and honeymoon. At each meeting we focused on typical features (looks, hairstyle, clothes, jobs etc.) of one member of a family and kids designed paper figures according to what they found out about 1960s.
We found out a lot of similarities especially concerning holidays like Christmas, Easter or grandparents´ school life. On the other hand we were also surprised by some traditions we had never heard of.
The results are still displayed in the school building in Erasmus+ corner, on the noticeboards or on our websites. All the kids involved enjoyed working on the tasks. They found out a lot of new things from the foreign pupils and were surprised by both – how much we share and also in what aspects each country is unique. We shared feedback from their grandparents on how much time they spent together and whether they got to know something new and interesting from each other and the answers were very positive. Children visited them more often, they looked at old photos together and talked about the past. They also got to know and understood each other´s world better.
