Project Summary

The Erasmus plus KA219 project, entitled “Non Limits, but borders: Migratory Movements from the Past to Today”, was realized by the Liceo J.Sannazaro of Naples in Italy (coordinating school) in partnership with the Liceo “M, Eminescu “of Cluj Napoca in Romania and the” A.Camus “Lyceum of Nimes in France (beneficiary schools). The project started from a historical reflection on the theme of the movements of peoples in the past, starting from archaic Greece and from the policy of conquering ancient Rome, up to more recent times. In particular, taking into account the current migratory emergency, the students have analyzed the answers they gave and are giving the European States, and in particular the countries on which the schools participating in the project insist, to the problem of the arrival of migrants. from depressed or war areas and which integration policies have activated. Thus, in the first year of the project, the students compared the different models of integration and construction of multicultural societies, especially in the Mediterranean area, which has always been a crossroads of different civilizations and is still among the privileged routes of immigrants. in Europe. After this historical reflection, it has been defined the meaning that the boundaries still have, not only from a political but also cultural point of view, and students have perceived the value of borders not as a limitation or a barrier, but as a point of contact with other cultures. In the second year of the project, in particular, a direct path of knowledge of the other, of the other traditions, customs and ways of life began. The schools opened up to the territory and made contact with communities deeply rooted in their own cities, with cultural and voluntary associations working with migrants, with cultural mediators, doctors and photojournalists who transferred their experiences on the topic to the students. At this point, schools became training laboratories and meeting places to reflect and discuss together, confront and share. The results of these civilization meetings were documented through interviews, reportages, collections of personal stories that converged into an e-book, entitled “Cling to life: Stories of travel and hopes”, in a short film produced by the French school and in a theatrical performance, realized by the Romanian school.
The priorities identified at the project level were thus achieved and referred in particular to inclusive education and open and innovative teaching supported by ICT, but the objective of promoting active and informed citizenship was also achieved.
All activities were planned and monitored, not only with ricurrent meetings of the project staff in the schools, but also during the transnational meetings, a useful meeting opportunity between the teachers of the different schools in partnership to plan the various activities and discuss work methods. During the two years cultural exchanges took place, the first in Italy in February 2017, the second in Romania in October 2017, the third in France in May 2018. In these occasions the pupils of the partner schools socialized the experience made in different countries on the theme of the project and presented the results of their research. For teachers too, exchanges were an important opportunity for training both on the use of new technologies in teaching and for reflecting on teaching methods to be activated to enhance civic, social and intercultural skills in students.
To make public and disseminate the results achieved, the partner schools organized conferences, seminars, round tables at local and national level to publicize the experience made, first of all involving the protagonists of the events. For a wider sharing of the product, a dedicated website was also created, www.nolimitsbutborders.eu.
The impact of the project on the users of the activities concerned the improvement of skills in the linguistic field, through in-situ learning, computer literacy, the development of social and civic competences and a greater awareness of the European dimension of their condition as citizens. . The sharing between teachers, bearers of the experiences of different European school systems, led to an improvement in teaching practices, experimented in classroom laboratories and field trips, which strengthened teaching / learning process in particular for those students who lived in a situation of psychological and motivational distress.
