Project Summary
Numbers and Social Justice is an Erasmus+ project between two schools, Stanislascollege of Delft and Colegio Inmaculada of Alicante. The appreciation and awareness of Numbers as a starting point should ideally lead to Social Justice as the ultimate goal. Our aim is therefore that students become aware of changes and can identify their own thinking about this at the end of the project. However, they also influence each other mutually, which is why we want to start working from both topics. Because we are fortunate to live in abundance, we have to start thinking of how we can share this with others. ‘Others’ might not only be our fellow countrymen but also those who seek shelter and security in our countries.
With our project we want our students to discover and compare the real cost of living in Holland and Spain and also the wealth, in a wider sense of meaning, that each country has. In addition, by having physical contact with less favored groups of people, we want them to reflect about Social Justice and extract their own conclusions about the following topic: ‘Is there enough wealth for all of us?’. We expect a big feeling of solidarity to arise from our students which will perhaps in a closer future will lead to the Social Justice that the United Nations demands for.
The participants in our project will be at least 15 students per school per year. Their age will range between 15 and 16 years of age and the candidates will be selected in Alicante by having at least an A2 English level and good grades. Candidates from Delf must be in the Spanish class. Two teachers from Alicante will travel to Delft and 3 from Delft will do the same during the activities periods. The activities will be short-term exchanges of groups of pupils traveling first in December from Alicante to Delft and then in April from Delft to Alicante. The project’s activities will be tasks to be developed in the schools and social-cultural visits to observe on first hand Delft’s and Alicante’s social and economic wealth and poverty. The school tasks will be implemented by cooperative work and web research in an autonomous way.
The project’s main objectives are:
1. Regarding Numbers:
– to make connections through research into historical events (crisis / exports / debts / banks) with the present.
– to examine the facts; first for their own country and then compare them to the other country in order to look at the differences objectively. (income / independence / value of money).
2. Regarding Social Justice:
– to become aware of the fact that they are global and European citizens which results in taking responsibilities towards other human beings.
– to think about (differences in) possibilities to live (economically) independently for young people in Spain versus the Netherlands.
– to investigate whether (and how) innovation and immigration in Europe lead to social inclusion.
General goals of the project are:
– Exploring students’ initial knowledge regarding our project that will be designed as an activity based on different options; since both schools are founded on Ignatian pedagogy in which “achieving the best from yourself” is the motto.
– Reflecting on how intolerance and fundamentalism can lead to separation, and vice versa tolerance and respect can lead to social inclusion.
– Helping the less economically fortunate students participate in our project.
-The students will know more about the culture and history of both countries.
– Improving our students’ ability for collaboration and doing research on the web.
– Experiencing the enrichment from a cultural exchange due to living with a host family in another country for several days.
– Improving our students’ English and Spanish language skills.
With these goals we achieve concrete results linked to all our priorities and therefore our students will:
-Reflect on the Social Justice well researched and without fake facts is the best way to share the wealth we have in both Delft and Alicante.
-At the end of each year’s last mobility the student’s will come up with their own conclusions of why we need ‘Social Justice’ in our society, and all of this supported by real ‘Numbers’.
By achieving all the objectives mentioned and producing the results above we will be promoting a comprehensive approach to language teaching and learning as well as strengthening the profile of our teachers involved. All of this will lead us to promote our most relevant priority, the social and educational value of the European cultural heritage, its contribution to job creation, economic growth and social cohesion.
The impact we expect in both communities will be big enough to affect all the students in both schools and their families and all the teachers. We also expect an impact in both cities aided by the local press and both schools’ social media. Through eTwinning we aim to impact many schools across Europe that will look for inspiration in our project’s TwinSpace.
