Project Summary
The partners analyzed the needs of teachers and students and set up a network of 6 schools from different EU countries: Austria as the coordinating school, the Czech Republic, Greece, Croatia and Italy. They have worked out a plan for a two-year international project. The project “On the traces of @ancient Europe” will provide incentives for researching and developing new strategies for teachers through the historical and ancient influence of Greek and Italian culture.
All project members are sensitized to the fact that Greeks and Romans have a considerable influence up to this century on our society and community. Teachers and students learn how to use ICT tools effectively for teaching, learning and communication. In a virtual international environment, they collect teaching material and insights in the form of project work with the help of eTwinning and Twinspace. The project seeks to effectively engage in various partnering activities that will result in better skills, knowledge and attitudes within the goals of the project and beyond.
Key competences are enhanced by project activities. Their knowledge is shared through communication with other countries and cultures. A wealth of knowledge and good practice examples will be created and a constant exchange of methods will take place, which can then be transferred and adapted to the different teaching situations in the partner countries. This leads to a general improvement in teaching. The proposed project and its activities will lead to international awareness raising, comparing and getting to know different cultures that have evolved from common roots, as well as peer-to-peer work and learning that Romans and Greeks have left their mark on the whole of Europe. Activities are designed to focus on students’ interests, taking into account the social aspect of elementary school students and their age perspectives. They explore and get an insight into the changes of the extended environment by means of selected examples (Romans, Greeks) which finally relate to social development. Furthermore, they experience the changes in the lives of people.
The enrichment of the language is a significant profitable value of the project. Experience has shown that even the most discreet student will make more effort when it comes to a specific purpose of communication. Most language activities are based on ICT and provide our students with ample opportunity to develop their skills in this area and to pursue a cooperative learning approach. As they share knowledge of routines, traditions, celebrations, information about their environment and history in their own countries, they gain insight into who we are and what we stand for as the essence of our identity as citizens. Knowing why we are the way we are and what our roots are based gives us the tools to develop empathy and tolerance towards other people and countries. Each teacher comes from a different educational system and can help share a variety of teaching practices specific to their environment.
The student mobility will provide a unique experience to deepen children’s understanding and understanding of the lives of their peers in other countries. The experience of visits and mobilities enables them to compare and learn under the umbrella of the European framework and the European organization in both education and social fields.
The results of the project are an international collection of materials, artworks, copywriting, stop-motion animations, eTwinning TwinSpace blog, online gallery, presentations of cultures, schools and countries. All participants improve their language skills.
The end products will be available to other schools and teachers so that they can be used as teaching material, as examples of good practice, as an idea for launching their own (international) projects to enhance their competences and skills and to encourage competence development , inspirational learning-learning environments.
Sustainability is also possible through school fees aimed at developing and implementing innovative practices demonstrating accelerated student progress, particularly in the ICT field. Schools have the opportunity to use the most effective practices from across Europe and include them in their curriculum. As a result of this change, the benefits to learners’ teachers and practices will continue to be felt long after the project has been completed.
