Project Summary

The project “Outdoor learning and sport activities” united at the beginning of the project six European schools, four special schools from Romania, Poland, Turkey and UK and two mainstream schools, from Portugal and Italy, that have integrated students with special needs. At the end of the first year the UK partner has decided to withdraw from the project, therefore we ended the project only five schools. Through this partnership, by exchanging best practices, we aimed to increase and diversify the number of outdoor activities in our schools. Our target groups were the teachers from partner schools and the students with special needs who have benefited of learning, teaching and training activities regarding outdoor activities like trekking, climbing, scout’s activities, biking, vortex, sailing and other. Another group of beneficiary was the parents of the students with special needs and the students from mainstream schools who were encouraged to get involved in three of the project activities: “Childhood games”, “Sport activities, opportunity for socialization” and “Innovative methods in inclusive environments”.
Our main objectives were:
– to increase with minimum 10% until the end of the project the number of outdoor activities included in the curricular offer of each partner school;
– to train at least 20% of each partner institution teachers for conducting outdoor activities by participating at transnational activities and by participating at further training;
– to increase with at least 30% the level of autonomy and the social skills of students with special needs by participating in transnational activities and in partnership with students from mainstream schools;
– to increase the level of well-being of the students with special needs from each partner school by involving at least 90% of them in the project activities:
– to facilitate the approaches of outdoor activities for parents, teachers, special education teachers, NGOs by creating a Good practice guide that will contain a collection of outdoor activities adapted to the special needs students.
For this a number of 6 learning, teaching and training activities took place in all the partner countries: 1.”Sport activities, an opportunity to socialization” in November 2016 in Romania,
2. “Childhood games” in January 2017 in Turkey,
3. “Innovative methods in inclusive environments” in May 2017 in Italy,
4. “Discovering the Island through outdoor games” in October 2017 in Portugal,
5. “Forest School” in January 2018 in Romania. This activity was initially planned to be held in November 2017 in UK. After the withdrawal of the UK school from the project, the Romanian school as the coordinator took the responsibility for organizing this activity.
6. “Water, earth, air in sports activity” in May 2018 in Poland.
The results of the project, in terms of knowledge, abilities and skills, are: knowledge and experience gained by the participants, stronger confidence and self-esteem of students with disabilities; 17 students and 50 teachers trained in transnational activities. We also benefit of a project’s logo, project’s Facebook page and E-twining page, videos of activities held on each theme, a project’s Diary and a Good practice Guide, translated in English and in every partner’s national language, containing 92 scripts of the outdoor activities adapted to the particularities of the students with special needs.
The project had a significant impact upon all the participants and participating organizations: much stronger, healthier and happier students, motivated to learn and attend classes; increased awareness regarding disabled people among students from mainstream schools and in the community; better motivated teachers to train in new fields that promote the health and the well-being of the students with special needs; improved English language and ICT skills for students, teachers and staff who participated in transnational activities; strong bonds between the partner schools, between parents and schools and between schools and other stakeholders.
Outdoor activities have long-term benefits especially for the health and well-being of the students, if are practiced regularly. All the partners will continue to implement outdoor activities and to upload them on the project’s Facebook page. In this way teachers from partner schools will stay in contact and will continue to exchange good practices.
