Overview of the Allview CSR Coaching Program in Germany 

The Allview CSR coaching program conducted by HDH e.V. (Main Association of the German Wood Industry e.V.) consisted of three sessions over a span of several months: April 22, 2024, June 19, 2024, and August 26, 2024. Delivered digitally via MS Teams, this 20-hour training was spearheaded by Lennart Mewes and Dr. Gregor Pfeifer, both representatives of HDH e.V. The primary goal was to equip participating companies with the knowledge and tools to integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices effectively into their operations. 

The CSR coaching sessions aimed to disseminate valuable insights from the Allview project, particularly focusing on CSR documents developed under work package 4 (WP4). These documents included: 

  • Identification of Regional/National Guidelines on CSR: Reports addressing the circular economy, migrants and refugees, and individuals with special needs. 
  • Good Practice Guide on CSR in the Furniture and Wood Sector: Guidance for companies to implement effective CSR practices. 
  • Social Return on Investment (SROI) Framework: A tool to measure the social impact of investments made in CSR activities. 

Participants had the opportunity to tailor the coaching content according to their specific needs, emphasizing themes like circular economy and sustainability. 

Founded in the 1980s, STEICO SE has become a leader in ecological building products, particularly wood fiber insulation materials. The company prioritizes sustainability, using renewable resources, especially wood from certified sources. Their product line includes insulation materials, structural timber, sarking boards, and waterproofing membranes. STEICO SE is committed to sustainable construction, contributing significantly to energy-efficient building practices. 

Established in 1900, Wiemann specializes in high-quality bedroom furniture. The company is renowned for its innovative designs and strong emphasis on sustainability. Wiemann uses wood from sustainable forests and continually optimizes production processes to minimize waste and conserve resources. Their commitment to “Made in Germany” quality has earned them recognition in international markets. 

The first session began with introductions, allowing participants to become acquainted with the speakers and each other. The coaching included a detailed presentation of HDH e.V. and the Allview project, outlining its objectives and the nine work packages, including WP4 on CSR. 

The importance of CSR in modern business was emphasized, along with modules aimed at integrating CSR into companies. Participants engaged in discussions about international best practices and case studies that highlighted successful CSR strategies across the wood and furniture sectors. 

The second session focused on training, sustainability, and occupational health and safety. The Allview training platform was presented, receiving positive feedback from participants who found the content appealing and engaging. 

Mr. Mewes detailed the training regulations for wood mechanics and woodworking mechanics, addressing the necessity for modernization to attract young talent and meet digitalization demands. Dr. Pfeifer discussed the implications of the EU Green Deal for companies, highlighting upcoming regulations, including the Construction Products Regulation and the Supply Chain Directive. 

The final session centered on training and the circular economy. Mr. Mewes provided insights into the complexities of amending training regulations, while Dr. Pfeifer elaborated on legislative efforts to foster a circular economy. He discussed the “design for circularity” concept, exploring how companies can adapt their products to meet these challenges and the potential benefits of certification programs offered by the Initiative Klimaschutz Holzindustrie. 

Following the coaching sessions, participants completed a survey regarding CSR practices in their companies. Both STEICO SE and Wiemann emphasized the importance of CSR, viewing it as integral to their operations and employee satisfaction. The companies acknowledged the advantages of employing individuals with disabilities and are committed to continuous improvement in CSR efforts.
