Project Summary
Our project is about the dangers of the internet nowadays. Our students and young people are connected to the internet 24 hours a day. The benefits of the internet are many but there’re also many dangers. From pinching mails to identity theft to bullying and to racism and grooming and sexting. Of course we need to protect our students from the dangers of the internet and we need to help them understand their role in all of these negative possible outcomes of being part of a system that wants us to be online 24 hours. That’s why we want to help our students and young people to recognize these threats and make them aware that they should not follow others who use the internet for criminal activities. Young people use the computer and their cellphones most of the time to go on the internet and they use all kind of social media to exchange information. This information is text messages but also pictures and movies. They also receive these messages during the day from others, sometimes from friends but because they’re part of group apps they get these messages also from total strangers. In the Netherlands and in the other countries of our participating partners cases of bullying and sexting has become more and more a weekly incident that can destroy young lives.
That’s why the main goal of our project is to give the students a manual with guidelines how to act on the internet. By giving them these guidelines we help them to understand how to react on received messages, pictures and films. We want them to think about the impact their messages, pictures and films have on others if the send something without thinking about the consequences for them-selves as well as others that are mentioned in these messages on those pictures and in these films.
To make it visual and clear what these dangers are we take some examples of the dangers and let the students turn these possibilities into theater scenes they will act out and we make a movie of this theater play. Together with the manual (guideline top 10 on posters) this movie can be used on every school as part of the curriculum of Media Wisdom and Social Studies.
The four participating schools (located in the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain and Germany) form Erasmus work groups (with 20 students in the age of 14 up to 16 and up to 4 teachers) that will create and produce the products in the two years the project will take. Their work and progress will be exchanged in learning and training activities at the schools. The first meeting in the Netherlands is to investigate which different forms of using the internet with it’s dangers there’re. Students will create a questionnaire to be filled in by students at the participating schools. With these results students will look at their online behavior and use examples from the media where it went wrong and how the could have prevented this. The second meeting in Iceland is to get the guidelines in a manual as well as on posters (top guidelines). By the use of creative writing students will take steps which help them to send proper messages in the future. The steps, when followed, will prevent them from sending messages that could be harmful for themselves or others. The third meeting in Spain is about the possible dangers which we’ll put into the theater scenes (using examples from the media and internet so everyone sees the impact of thoughtless sharing of bad messages), creating props and theater sets along the way. Finally the meeting in Germany is where we complete (scenes, props and theater sets) and perform the theater play that’ll be filmed and put on DVD’s to be distributed between the countries for their school and other schools interested in this project. To get this impact and fame in the participating countries we’ll use the same forms of social media and the use of the internet. To make our goals and products available for more people than our own we create a Facebook page and will be using Instagram and Whats App not only to communicate between the participants but also to get word around of what we’re doing and why!
