Project Summary

The main objective of the cooperation among our six partner schools has been to develop the child’s early speech, which is acquired at home, to a competent, literacy level through structured education provided at schools. Our goal was to bring our pupils’ ability to read and write to a higher level via different pedagogical methods that we compared during the project period. We all share the notion that reading and writing skills are essential to help pupils’ function competently at school, later at job, and in society. The six primary schools involved in this project have been working on improving reading and writing skills among pupils of ages 9-15. The teachers involved exchanged good practices and new innovative teaching methods with resources exchanged between educators and learners. At short-term exchanges of pupils strong intercultural knowledge has been experienced, but also the activities that took place at each partner school were concentrated on pupil-centred activities and involved more subjects. However, our project focused on the development of pupils’ reading and writing skills on a multidisciplinary level, so methods of cross-curricular activities were planned and executed. All schools reached the goal stated in the title of our project according to which our pupils found “Pleasure in Reading and Pleasure in Writing”. We introduced our pupils several types of literary genres via reading and writing. Shorter and longer types of them have been introduced in their native, minority and English languages (e.g. detective or investigative stories, newspapers, comics, recipes, poems, legends and tourist guides). This way our project developed our pupil’ basic skills and foreign language competences as well. Our pupils were involved in a lot of visits and field trips to presses, newspaper editorial offices, libraries, museums, galleries. They also visited theatres and cinemas to investigate background scenes of these institutions. These activities made us widen our indirect project partners. Authors of books, journalists, artists, illustrators also took part in our project. With the additional aim to develop pupils’ social and communication skills along with self-confidence, our pupils interviewed the experts listed above. Theatrical plays, reciting competitions and reading marathons have become a sustainable part of our schools’ life and are included into the pedagogical programs of our annual events. Videos taken during pupils’ mobility exchanges have been shared via digital tools on social media and school web pages. Our partners also shared our press releases and project results to wider society. By the end of the project our teachers gained better organizational skills. This involvement of partner institutions and other school parents have brought higher educational scores for the schools involved in the project in our own towns, in its region and on national level as well. Several final products have been created on European level, e.g. an international Recipe book, a collection of local legends of each partner school, products that we intent to use in the future as well.
