Project Summary
The “Power of Maths” project was carried out by 5 primary schools in 5 different countries: Portugal, Turkey, Lithuania, Italy and Poland. The project has been directed for pupils aged 11 to 14, that is fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at each partner school.
The main goal of the project was to interest students in mathematics and motivate them to learn this subject, and thus improve the results of external exams in mathematics among students of partner schools. We achieved our goals by showing and making students aware of how mathematics is present and needed in their daily lives. That is why we have completed many projects related to this task: mathematics in the kitchen, art, music, architecture, geography and history. These projects were implemented with the use of modern multimedia programs, such as: PowToon, LearningApps, Prezi, Kahoot,
PowerPoint or Publisher. We also undertook a number of activities on the eTwinning and Moodle platforms and created a project website and a social profile on Facebook.
The activities and results during the project implementation are:
– developing lesson scenarios with the use of effective and activating teaching methods
– creating games, quizzes, competitions that were carried out during partner visits.
– implementation of the project “Europe in figures”, in which we presented general information and figures about the partner country before the visit.
– implementation of educational projects: 1) Beautiful mathematics – symmetry and asymmetry in art, 2) There is no music without mathematics, 3) The secret of the golden ratio, i.e. divinity
proportions in geometry, aesthetics, architecture, nature., 4) Great mathematicians, 5) Mathematics on vacation, 6) Shapes in nature.
– conducting four tests of mathematical competences, detailed analysis of their results and drawing conclusions
– the anthem of the project
– project logo
– a glossary of mathematical concepts and theorems in English and the language of partner countries
– Christmas and New Year cards with mathematical elements,
– maths calendar
– the spatial structure of the building, specific to a given partner country
– newsletters, information leaflets, information boards promoting project activities.
– publishing a publication containing a collection of all abstracts using modern teaching methods and making the results of the project available on the platform.
These activities helped students raise their level of mathematical, logical and abstract thinking. Maths games and activities allowed students to play with and think positively about mathematics, and eliminated the stress and uncertainty of students with regard to the subject.
The project team working in each partner school was coordinated by the Polish primary school in Piła via electronic communication. During four international meetings, including one online meeting, the project team had the opportunity to exchange examples of good practice in teaching mathematics and enrich not only mathematical knowledge, but also cultural and social ones, and raise the level of the English language.
All jointly developed methods and interesting ideas were, if possible, disseminated more widely to the entire local community, so that teachers from other schools could use them in own work.
We evaluated all project activities, in which we determined the increase in knowledge of project participants, the increase in teachers’ competences, and work progress in project, quality of organized partner meetings, commitment of all participants, quality of products and effective communication.
