Project Summary
For three years, the project “Programming: The Language of the 21st Century” is developing the digital skills of the students of the Joan-Miro Elementary School in Berlin, Germany, as well as the CEIP Mare Nostrum School in Torrox, Spain. For the past five years, we have been actively working to integrate elements of “digital education” into the school’s curriculum. As a part of the project, we made room for the needed class times, rooms and equipment in all grades.
With the help of the two specific tools “Scratch and ScratchJr”, the students from first to sixth grade learned the basics of programming through playful activities. Those activities were carried out in the form of workshops. At the annual “Scratch Day” the results were presented.
The close cooperation with the partner school in the development of the activities enabled a productive exchange as well as a joint reflection of the opportunities and limits of digital education. Particularly interesting was the exchange of the in Spain introduced “Cultura Digital” in the grades five and six.
While working on the project, the students fostered their digital skills and the logical thinking by introducing new tools such as: “Calliope Mini”, “Little Bits”, “Makey Makey”, “Mind Robot”, “Robot Mouse” and “mBot”.
Thanks to the project, we were able to promote digital education into everyday teaching. Since the school year 2019/2020, the grades three and four are taking a corresponding class which is integrated into their weekly schedule. The other grades continue working in workshops led by external experts and school staff.
