Project Summary

In human societies, public spaces, epecially urban, represent all the places of movement and assembly which are used by everyone, either which do not belong to anyone, or which are public property or, exceptionally, privately owned . Public space can be represented as two distinct parts. Firstly, places accessible to the public (s), used by the inhabitants, such as streets, squares, courts, gardens, parks, that is, the network and its ramifications which allow everyone to move freely, with double respect for accessibility and free access. Secondly, it also evokes a place of political debate, a confrontation of private opinions to be made public, a democratic practice, a form of communication, with the airing of various points of view.

Today, in the “developed” countries of which Europe is a part, public space seems to be a reality that is under threat. Transport specialists menace to turn this space open to all into nothing more than a place of movement and transport . Tensions also arise between public and private interests, with two dangers that menace social interactions, on the one hand, the “total politicization” (totalitarian) which would prohibit individuals from going about their business and living as they please their personal interests and, on the other hand, the total “depoliticization” which would ruin the idea of a common world and could lead to social separatism.

The democratization of culture, by proposing art in public spaces, opens culture and art to everyone, it makes it possible to to present art and culture to those who would not normally go looking for it, thus promoting the opening up and emancipation on social and political issues.

Artists are in touch with their environment, human or landscape, which they come to reveal, shift, disturb, transform, discreetly or in a spectacular way, momentarily or durably. These projects bring us to experience many aspects of human culture – relational, urban, cultural, poetic …

Following these observations, shared across our different European countries, we wish to develop a project with the following objectives:
    • Experiment with ways of appropriating public space, that it is not only a place of passage but also a place of life, exchange, sharing, experimentation.
    • Encourage the participation of people in events in public spaces that lead to more social inclusion.
    • Adapt new tools to an approach of organizing cultural activities in public places, and share various skills, various approaches to encourage creativity.
    • Transmit methodologies of the organization of public space – the teaching of group management tools, to artists or organizers.

We are carrying out this project on a transnational scale with the association of ASS (FRANCE), popular education association, L’alberro de Macramé (ITALY), the Tube (FRANCE) and the collective 1989 (BELGIUM).
Our varied skills (singing, dancing, puppetry, theater and clown) allow us to decompartmentalise the disciplines and organize dialogue between all the actors to allow the implementation of tools, ways of doing things, exchange to promote the artistic and cultural expression in public. We want events that promote the inclusion of all audiences and fight against discrimination and promote the empowerment of individuals.

In each of our localities, we will set up an experiment in public space in order to share, exchange and analyze our practices with a view to creating a technical booklet.
