Project Summary

The project “Reporters of Cultural heritage without borders” is a project of four European countries: Greece, Slovakia, Portugal and Spain. The project aims at creating an opportunity for participants to take an active part in increasing the popularity of the heritage of folk costumes of the involved countries by extending their knowledge and acquiring special manual and art skills. Participants will also take part in organised visits to different museums, institutions, galleries and festivals focusing on folk costumes and folk customs in order to gain a deep understanding of differences and possible similarities of other countries’ cultures. All their attained knowledge of folk culture will be transformed into new European costumes designs which will be created in international groups of students by combining existing folk costume patterns, materials, colours and shapes of four countries. This creative work will be carried out during the four short-term exchanges of students gradually producing certain parts of the new costumes. The final outcomes will be presented to the wide public not only virtually but also at the annual festival of Rusyn and Ukrainian Culture in Svidnik, Slovakia in May, 2022.
However, the second aim of the project which will consequently go hand in hand with the previously mentioned one is to teach the project participants the basics of journalistic reportage in its four forms: photography, video, articles and radio. Therefore, there will be two staff training events for teachers: the first one at the beginning of the first year and dealing with photo and video reportage and the second one at the beginning of the second year and dealing with radio broadcasting and writing reportage articles. The participant teachers will pass their knowledge on to their students through separate seminars in their countries afterward. Subsequently selected international teams of students will create different forms of reportage material during the exchanges of students. The final reportage photos will be displayed at the exhibitions either on school premises or at different public places at the end of each student exchange. There will also be created space for public viewing of video reportages during the exhibitions.
The reason why we decided to run this project with two main aims rather than just one is that we would like to create a wider range of opportunities for the project participants. We realise that not all students have a tendency to enjoy manual work or are good at it; therefore, linking it with the idea of practical media education, which focuses on digital skills mainly, will give us the opportunity to involve students with different skill preferences.
The goals of the project will be materialised in tangible outcomes shared and distributed among the public through various channels. We will organize reportage photos exhibitions, fashion shows to present our European folk costumes to the public, and offer a “touring exhibition” with art photos of all our costumes and their accessories for schools and folk art institutions to share. We will also create and publish online teaching materials for teachers eager to put together a reportage team and start implementing practical media education at their schools.
