Project Summary

The result of our project is an educational tool in the form of a board game which allows depending on its utilisation, to acquire or to test, in class or via flipped classroom, scientific knowledge linked to environmental issues in English. The game can also be played online.
Our project “Rescuers of Nature” 2014-2017 has been carried out by students aged between 15 and 17, coached by their English and science teachers. It is structured around environmental issues in a global context which is marked by preoccupations linked to global warming. Our language of communication was English. Our objective is to make students, families and the educational staff aware of environmental issues and to change behaviours. In the light of the Paris Agreement (COP 21) it seems important to us to transmit via our game the values of sharing and eco-citizenship vehicled by the European community. The participation of our students in a European project of such an important scale opened them to horizons and perspectives which had been unconsidered before. Our goals are: to develop 1) scientific knowledge linked to the environment; 2) linguistic and communicational skills, mainly in English; 3) cooperation among peers around a common project. The partnership has been coordinated by the Lycée Jean Moulin in Les Andelys (France) and includes 3 other partner schools, found via Etwinning, situated in Germany (Gymnasium Lehrte), Italy (Istituto Curcio) and Spain (IES Albero). Our partnership brought together members from very different backgrounds, coming from Europeans with common preoccupations and multiple approaches. The geographic situations of the four schools are very specific: rural, insular and urban areas. The educational specificities are also notable from one school to another: a strong dominant of the litterature and artistic fields in Italy and Spain, and Germany and France being more technically and scietifically oriented.
A transnational meeting was organised in Paris and 4 mobilities took place with the partner schools uniting 150 students and teachers.
In order to enhance our data base, visits organised during the different mobilities were of cultural, scientific, artistic and ecological interest. Other main activities for the management and implementation of the game were working sessions in English during the mobilities. Communication throughout the project was excluively happening in English as reflected in the resulting videos and prezis.
Dissemination was assured on a local and regional basis via written press and broadcast media, websites of the regional schoolboard and schools, reunions gathering parents, colleagues, adjacent schools and also via posters.
Thanks to this project, our students acquired necessary skills, particularly in English, for their future professional lives as European citizens. The project contributed to give sense to their academic learning. Participants have been awarded a Youth Pass which materialises their involvement and acquired skills during the project. Our output (the game) is available in our respective schools and to all teachers who desire to download it online.
