Project Summary

Due to the difficult political conditions the migration in Europe has recently significantly increased, which has brought here children with different cultural and etnical backgrounds. Their teachers face the problem of how to integrate them into the school life and offer them a high-quality education. In many European countries there is a problem with new immigrants’ low levels of educational attainment and dropping out of school, as well as lack of differentiated learning materials for teachers to use.
The objectives of the project were to share the exciting teaching methods and materials which contribute to the teaching of the refugees between the schools and teachers and compile new learning materials with the help of the students. The compiled study materials contain multiple subjects and are meant for different levels. Another aim was the inclusion of different interest-groups like refugees, local students, teachers and members of the community, and through different activities students and teachers had a chance to place themselves into the role of refugees and hence the hardships of integration and language learning wase understood. With this project, we aimed to develop intercultural competences in all students, raise awareness about the situation of migrants, and to fight prejudice and racism.
Five schools from different countries in Europe participated in this project. The schools have different experience in teaching the refugees and therefore had an opportunity to share experiences and accumulate the best methods.
Each project partner had a leading role in composing study materials for one subject (e.g. math, science, language learning, etc.), creating educational floor and board games and creating study materials using online learning platforms. During the project, different methods of teaching refugees were introduced and practiced. An important part was also to integrate non-formal methods and games to teaching processes and using ICT in lessons.
The materials composed during the project are published on the homepage created during the project as well as on the Facebook page and available for everyone to use. The participating teachers have gained experiences and increased their competences regarding learning and teaching strategies for the education of new immigrants and child refugees. These methods were documented, recorded, disseminated and presented in various ways to make it available to our colleagues.
The impacts on students (including new immigrants and child refugees), teachers, and school community are various, for instance, a boost of self-confidence, which many participants encountered, is helpful in personal and entrepreneurial ways. Students and teachers developed practical skills, enlarged their competence in interdisciplinary work and teaching methods. The knowledge of foreign languages has increased and the participants as well as the community members are now more aware of the EU’s broad diversity and interculturality. Teamwork and management skills were also improved in an international dimension.
Long-term-benefit will be guaranteed through publications on diverse platforms, like school websites, homepages, Facebook page, and by sharing developed teaching materials. Publications will be presented to schools and colleagues in multiplier events.
