Project Summary

The main concept of SOS will be for students from Groenlo and Dungarvan to work together and communicate with each other in a variety of ways. The topic of Science and Sport will be the topic that they will communicate and work over.
In doing this, the students from each school will learn to work with students from a different nationality and who do not have the same native language. The students and teachers will have to organize the visits in advance of the trips.
The objectives of the activities will be
1. To promote sport and physical exercise for all the school population in an inclusive way that will involve everyone regardless of age, gender, physical fitness and sporting ability.
2. To encourage healthy living for the staff, students and families of the two schools.
3. To learn about the sporting cultures of the partner countries.
4. To gain experience in organizing games, activities, training sessions, challenges and training schedules.
5. To learn about the science of Nutrition, Respiration, Body Mechanics and elite performance.
The idea would be to do this in such a way that those involved will be educated, informed and motivated to make sustainable changes to their lifestyle that will be positive for their physical and mental health.
Equally as important will be the experience gained from having to organize these activities, modules and workshops.
The key skills that we will be hoping to promote will be
1. Communication skills
2. ICT skills
3. Teaching and coaching skills
4. Organizational skills
Of these skills, the communication skills will be central and varied. The students will use a variety of platforms e.g. emails, E-twinning, google classroom, Skype and of course face to face. There will also of course be a wide variety of people to communicate with; host students, visiting students, host teachers, visiting teachers, host parents, other stakeholders.
There will be as many students involved as possible in the project. There will be “competition” amongst the students regarding who will be able to go on the foreign trips. This will keep the level of participation and motivation high and lead to more successful project. The students involved will be in the age range 14-16. Dungarvan is an all boys school so it will be beneficial to work with girls and boys from Groenlo. This also offers an experience for both student cohorts to experience a very different educational situation.
The activities to be undertaken will be student led, i.e. the students will be given as much autonomy as possible when it comes to designing and deciding on what exactly these activities will be, under the supervision of the teachers of the partner schools. Given the nature of the title and the project these activities will include, but not be limited to:
1. Student led coaching sessions
2. Competitive games and sports
3. Non-competitive games and activities
4. Scientific workshops
5. Student led science classes/presentations
6. Competitive and collaborative activities e.g. quizzes, poster competitions, art competitions, science challenges
7. Questionnaires and surveys
It is also in conjunction with these ideas that the participants in the project will as well be encouraged to make positive changes in their lives such as eating healthier and engaging in different types of physical activities and more often. They will be more likely to engage in future projects of a similar type, and thus engage in lifelong learning. It will also lead to a greater understanding and tolerance of different countries and cultures, making them both more curious and open minded about countries and regions within Europe and beyond.
It is hoped that this project will be the beginning of a new period of European projects, travel and collaboration after a break of 3 years. In the case of Groenlo, it will be a continuation of a strong history of European exchange and collaboration.
At the beginning of the project there will be a survey written by both schools and carried out in the partner school regarding the knowledge of the other country. At the end of the project a similar survey will be carried out, this will provided evidence as to whether the project has had an impact on the students/teachersinvolved.
