Project Summary

With the funding and support from Erasmus+ we in “Script Collaboration: Norway – Latvia” have opened two writers rooms for young aspiring filmmakers, one in Tromsø and one in Riga. Our main goal was to create a safe space for our writers where everybody was welcomed to share thoughts, ideas and knowledge. We did this by focusing on developing a story we all could relate to in some way or another, and shared the responsibility of making the story work. We´ve been arranging writing sessions in both countries where participants from the groups could attend.

We completed 3 travels in total during the 18 month project period. The hosting countries were responsible for planned different activities to show each countries unique ways of living and the local culture. We also used the opportunity to go on road-trips, drove to smaller and lagers villages, visited museums and monuments, spoke to locals (sometimes with the help of the hosting country) and participated at different arrangements that had a connection to our story. We made sure to set aside time to have idea development- and writing sessions, the idea development sessions being less formal than the writing sessions. We went out for food and drinks, the goal being that ideas would flow naturally and easy without anyone experiencing an overwhelming pressure to perform.

By end of November 2018 we had written outlines for all the episodes, and completed a first draft of the first episode. We´ve also completed writing documents like script treatment for each episode, plot points and details on each character and the interactions between them. The idea development was highly influenced by our trips to Latvia and the trip to Norway. Learning about the cultures in the two countries helped us understand how the characters would interact with each other, and use this to portray the differences between the Norwegian and Latvian countries. Our original goal was to complete the script before the end of the project, but quite early on we realized that this was a project we wanted to continue working on after the project period had ended. The 18 months were therefore spent focusing on developing and exploring different konsepts and ideas, that is harder to do without the support from the Erasmus+ program.
