Project Summary
Visual reading is one of the areas of language learning such as listening, reading, writing and speaking. With the activities about visual reading in our school we saw that our students got increase on their understading, inquiry skills, expressing themselves in writing and orally and also we associated it with different cultures and environments. Thus, we identified the common development of students language with visual reading skills in different countries via mental, emotional and social skills and integrated them with universal values. As a result of the activities and events, we provided the countries values experienced at a national level that we worked together, be perceived as universal values and so we put out a product that will benefit the public of different cultures.
While these studies have achieved , the objectives set out below:
-We enabled our students to interpret the visuals correctly, to see their lives from a different viewpoint, to create a different life perspective, to increase self confidence, to realize the universal values.
-A significant increase on emotional, mental and social sides of students was provided.
-The recognition of a visual, to research the meaning of it,with different perpectives to enrich the values about visuals, exploring the codes were provided.
-Students got high motivation ,curiosity and interest on visual objects.
Our Project consists of 6 countries under the control of coordinator,Turkey.
1.Konya-Selçuklu Cahit Zarifoğlu Primary School; is a great institution with 66 teaching staff and 1432 students. As a Project coordinator, the first step in our mobility was to present the Project to our partners and the activities about the value of ‘’Tolerance’’ was shown in practice. Our partners were : 2. Croatia-Slatina Osnovna Skola Josipa Kozarca Primary School ; worked on the value of ‘’Honesty’’ and presented the activities practically. 3.Romania-Constanta Scoala Gimnazial Dmitrie Cantemir Primary School; took the value of ‘’Generosity’’ and studied about it in their schools in practice. 4. Poland-Poniatowa Szkola Podstawowe im. Stefena Zeromskiego w Poniatowej Primary School ; they also studied on the value of ‘’Cleanliness’’ and prepared activies about it in their schools. 5. Italy-Nettuno Instituto Comprensivo Nettuno 1 Priamary School ; Our Italian partner prepared materials, visuals about the value of ‘’Responsibility’’ and they shared those with us. 6. Spain-La Solana CEIP Romero Pena Primary School; focused on the value of ‘’Helpfullness’’ and prepared the visuals and activities on it and all the activities completed. All our partners did one’s part entirely and our Universal Story Book was prepared with the help of each countries children.
As a part of our Project, visual materials, posters were hung on school walls. Our students analyzed and interpreted posters related to the actual value. They wrote in the form of short stories. Lighted wall panels were prepared for school and the brochures, hand papers ,games etc. describing the values were prepared and distributed to students and parents. In our cognitive training classes, games like last letter, charades etc. were played to increase visual reading. Also story cubes had been created and students were asked to tell a short story with pictures on the cube. For the final stage, our students were asked to write their ideas about the visuals and put them in Piggy Banks. They contributed to the formation of Universal Values Story Book.
As a result of the project, participants visual reading and interpretation skills had a noticeable increase ,participants were correctly interpreted by visual messages and they also had the ability to give visual messages. They had the capacity (skills) to communicate with others by using and understanding the visuals. They also learnt how to understand (reading) and use (writing) the visuals and by using visuals. With the ability to read the visual expressions used in daily life, they got the chance that with a type of image students can express themselves at least. They had an increase motivation in visual reading and thus developed their self-confidence. While developing students’ horizons in thinking, they also gained the ability to examine the events by providing a wide view angle. The development of visual reading skills in students learning, comprehension, recall and intellectual independence was a great importance in terms of skills.
The studies conducted during the Project will be shared as interactive online via our school web page (www.cahitzarifogluilkokulu.meb.k12.tr) and the facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/selcuklucahitzarifogluilkokulu/) , so the importance of visual reading will be described in concrete.
As a result of our Project, we put our product ‘’ Universal Values Story Book ‘’ and it shows us the applicability of the impact of the Project not at the national level but also at the international level.
