Project Summary

The Slovak Republic is seen to be a country within the European Union with the lowest number of foreigners when compared to the native population. Statistics show that there is a continuous increase of foreigners coming to study here, who are looking for better economic conditions or entering Slovakia to accompany their life partners to live here. As a result of global economic changes, the number of foreigners arriving in Slovakia has increased due to the EU labour market migration. Another phenomenon contemporary appearing are Slovaks returning home from long -term stay abroad, coming with their partners usually foreigners and their children who were born abroad. Globalisation and demographic trends are expected to influence another foreigners increase in shorter and longer perspective.
Speaking the recipient country language is a fundamental prerequisite for the effective integration of foreigners into new society environment. It is therefore necessary to create the conditions for foreigners reflecting all their needs for successful entry into the education system in Slovakia. Children of foreigners are considered to be a specifically disadvantaged target group in the recipient country education system moreover the fact that learning the language of new country is a prerequisite for their inclusion not only into the education system but also for their integration into the whole society. Since currently the education system in Slovakia does not offer a full-scale effective solution for learning the Slovak language, the project presented here is targeted to support running solutions for obtaining basic language skills for children of foreigners but also for increasing the competences of teachers and school managers in Slovakia schools.
An appropriate solution seems to be the preparing of basic documents (curriculum, methodological recommendations, etc.) that specify the most important aspects of learning Slovak as a foreign language, not only as a second language of national minorities living in Slovakia. As a necessity it appears to be the creation of new didactic documents that will perceive a specific target group needs reflecting their mother tongue as well as preparing didactic documents for non-Latin pupils.
The project is focused to support the development of professional skills of managers and teachers in education system, through formal and informal learning tools, in order to strengthen their social, civic and intercultural competences in the field of education to benefit the disadvantaged communities and thus help them to eliminate differences in education process accepting all geographical and socio-economic disparities. At the same time, the project contributes to develop or improve procedures to meet the needs of disadvantaged groups, which are children of foreigners in Slovakia and children of natives from Slovakia abroad, concerning the social, ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity. At the same time project is focused to promote intercultural dialogue, target group fundamental human rights respect in the process of education and social inclusion, and the promotion of active citizenship of foreigners in Slovakia and Slovaks living abroad. Last but not least the project will contribute to the development of cooperation between education partners both at national and international level by their active participating in the composition and testing of learning materials in the widest and different environments. The outputs of the project will serve a wide target group (both teachers and students) in Slovakia, but also worldwide abroad when addressing requests of Slovak natives and their children to obtain effective instruments for native language learning abroad.
