Project Summary
The project aims to take urgent action to slow down climate change and its impacts. It’s affecting not only communities, but every country on every continent. We witness many weather changes leading to natural disasters (wildfires, storms, floods, droughts) and environmental crisis leading to a loss of jobs and many social problems, and severe public health issues all over the world. We need to share responsibility about that big challenge and to bring our young ones to be more sensitive and to gain awareness, knowledge and ability to cope with that issue.
We are hopeful that adaptation to the climate change is possible, at the indiviual, family or communities’ scales. Our objective is to promote “small green steps”, daily gestures to inflect positive behaviours towards that global phenomenon. A famous french quote inspired us “les petits ruisseaux font les grandes rivières” (small streams form big rivers).
The project aims studies, exchange and dissemination, among the School communities (teachers, students, other school staff, families and local organisations) of educational partners – from five different countries of the European Community and one, Turkey, eligible to educational grants- , and good practices, in order to develop initiatives, and to give students the basic skills and knowledge to grow up their entrepreneurial spirit as well as their environmentally friendly behaviour. We also want our students to be more comfortable in speaking, and to be able to clearly present their ideas and their proposals.
Pupils will discuss and learn about a range of energy sources, greenhouse gasses, climate change & global warming; they will also collect knowledge about pollution, waste management and plastic substitution. For creating environmental awareness among students and general public, various campaigns can be launched regurlarly. In each school, essay writing competition, painting competition, photos contest, posters, vlogs, lectures, debates, on the topic of environment can be organized. Some workshops will be arranged in all the partner schools, not only for the participants but for a larger group of students, like vegetables gardening, trees planting, knowing the uses of water, eco-friendly energies etc.
In the chore of the project, stand the necessity to create and animate a vegetable garden in every school involved; by doing so, we can educate our students and the adults as well, to the importance of growing products in a respectful manner, to the better way to use the resources, especially water, to avoid waste and choose recycling instead of buying short-life items, to avoid plastic-wrapped packages, and at least to mind their daily diet.
Students, led by their teachers, will seek information on the effects of human activities on the climate changes : the use of A/C for instance, the more and more frequent plane trips, the internet uses and the massive energy consumption. They will calculate ecological footprint as well.
Many activities plan to include students, parents and other family members to achieve a real change of attitude in their daily life. This means to present simple and realistic objectives, such as the reducing in energy uses, the diversity of recycling possibilities, the evolution in transportation and mobilities, but without weighing guilt.
In doing so, students will gain skills to protect and to feel responsible for the changes in the environment, they will realise that the future of humanity will depend on individual choices and behaviours. Students can spread their results among the school community, the city/area, the political representatives (by addressing them letters or reports, by inviting them).
The project attends to enhance active citizenship action within the community, to promote concrete, innovative actions by young active citizens leading to a more respectful social demeanor.
By means of this project ;teachers. students and parents could be informed about waste management, renewable and non-renewable energy and forest preservation, short supply chains, local production etc. The project will highlight the necessity of young people’s collaboration to lead the way to a better and more sustainable future. It can develop students ‘cross curricular and social skills such as research, team-work and team building, critical thinking, communication in foreign languages, self confidence. It will also help teachers to put at bay all kind of negative theories such as the “big collapse” or the denial of the climate change. By educating on the topic, we want to increase the positive spirit : the problem is big, for sure, but we can face it and act together to build a better future than forecasted.
