Project Summary

Four schools, two each from Germany and from Catalonia/Spain will cooperate discussing the topic S. O. S. (Social Online Service). They will work internet-based, as the members of our society are increasingly connected online. Our project S. O. S. wants to strengthen our youth and also support disadvantaged young people on their way into working life. Despite the relaxation in the vocational training market, caused by demographic change as well as a booming economy, the transition from school to training and employment continues to be difficult for a large number of young people – especially for socially disadvantaged and individually handicapped young people. Access to the labour market is often barred to young people without appropriate school and vocational qualifications. However, adolescents and young adults from uneducated families or young people with a migrant background are by no means less gifted than the average of their peers. For their social, educational and professional integration, however, they often require targeted support that is tailored to their individual life situation.
In our S. O. S. project students will receive skills to be prepared for entry into the job market. The planned activities should raise the standard of education of students with only basic skills and knowledge, and eventually reduce the number of early school leavers. Different competences are strengthened in diverse activities. On the one hand, the students are strengthened in the transformative service learning – learning through engagement, which combines social engagement of students with professional learning. New thematic priorities will be regularly set to unlock the potential of learning through engagement in order to address many educational and societal challenges. At the same time, this tool will prepare students for the labour and training market, boosting their opportunities and competitiveness. In the process, the students will get an insight into how to start their own business. And last but not least, the students will increase their digital skills as part of this project.
With the help of the project S. O. S., students are introduced to a variety of tasks they need to prevent impending unemployment, even later. They work with a platform that allows them to experience entrepreneurship on a small scale. They need to research the market, coordinate supply and demand, and ultimately evaluate the success of their business. This requires close cooperation with other members of the community and there are many tasks to complete. These require initiative and creativity from the students. In addition, this collaboration encourages the integration and recognition of our students in society, and they can present themselves as useful members of the community. Last but not least, working with S. O. S. strengthens their digital and communicative competence. These key competences will open doors for lifelong learning.
S. O. S. should also improve the quality of teaching by revising and strengthening the professional profile of our teachers. Our project is intended to encourage the individual schools to use new technologies, to get to know new teaching methods and to implement them. This is to ensure that students are prepared more effectively for their future employment. To achieve this, the different methods of each school have to be shared.
In addition to exchanging students, videoconferencing and editing various documents, the individual teaching methods will be demonstrated and illustrated on site. Helpful teaching material should be exchanged with colleagues. An e-book will be created to illustrate the S. O. S. method. It can also be very helpful and valuable as a kind of manual for other schools. In addition, all measures and processes are recorded in a website. Later, E-Twinning/EST will be used to widely disseminate the entire material, our ideas and teaching methods. Another point is to promote the use of English in subjects other than English.
Through this project, students become aware that they are part of a European community and need English as a common language. Basic knowledge of English and a willingness to be mobile is a chance for our students to have a better future. Giving students the opportunity to make their own lives self-responsibly will be one of the key actions of this project.
All partners will work together in teaching and education. We want to open and develop our schools so that our youth can enjoy learning again. Our students will become more competent, will have better skills and will be better prepared for the challenges they will face in their lives. This includes both the world of work and the realization of their own life plan.
