Project Summary
The project Sport Unites begins in 2013, when the main coordinators of both schools are meeting for the first time and the idea of cooperation is born. Given that both schools are very different, especially the structure and social status of pupils, a common theme is sought that could attrack such a different group. The theme sports, healthy lifestyles and information technology were the opportunity. During the creation of the project, we mainly focused on the development of language competences in English and in German. At the same time, the project aimed at deepening the knowledge of the realities, discovering similarities and differences between partner countries, taking advantage of new innovative practices in education, promoting awareness of sport and healthy lifestyle, increasing physical activity in the target group and gaining new key competencies in ICT. Two partner organizations were involved in the project: Primary School Brno, Bakalovo nabrezi and German school from Leipzig 20. Oberschule. The primary school in Brno is a school with extended language teaching, which is attended by 750 pupils from Brno and the surrounding area. The school builds on the age-old tradition of teaching foreign languages, and its main goal is to prepare pupils for the best possible further study. The German School is located in the industrial area of Leipzig, with the predominance of heavy mechanical engineering and the textile industry, which creates certain characteristics in the social composition of the population. The school combines two types of schools: Realschule and Hauptschule. Realschule is attended by intermediate students, Hauptschule is preparing pupils for further vocational training. As one of the few schools in Leipzig, it exclusively devotes itself, helps and monitors immigrant students. Thanks to this, the school received the title “School of Tolerance”.
At the beginning of the project, websites were created to find all the information about the project and partner schools. We regularly updated and supplemented the site with all information related to the project activities. In the first part of the project, and the first mobility had preceded, presentations about important sports figures of the cities Brno and Leipzig. Pupils met the sporting achievements of the pupils of both schools and the sporting maturity of the regions. The pupils involved in mobility could also experience on their own during the exchange stays. The first virtual meeting of pupils took place before the first mobility, the pupils became acquainted about popular sports in the given regions and schools. At the beginning of the project, the eTwining platform was also established. The platform has been regularly updated and supplemented with materials, photos and videos based on the project. Before the first exchange, an anthem was created in the music classes, were prepared maskots and cheerleaders activities, which were subsequently used during an exchange stay. Before each face to face encounter, the pupils met virtualy the city of Leipzig using online technology. The first two mobilities were devoted mainly to sports and to the sporting maturity. For the first time, pupils participating in mobility had to rely on their skills in a foreign language. During the stay, pupils and teachers enriched their skills in both foreign languages, gained new experiences, discovered differences between partner schools, cities, regions and countries. The second mobility was in a rather relaxed spirit. During the first part of the project, pupils learned about popular sports in schools. Sports were introduced with simplified rules. In the second part of the project we created a dictionary of the most used words among teenagers and translated it in 3 languages. Based on the survey, we created the rules of the right sports fan, for which no sports club would have to be ashamed. Within the framework of one of the mobility plans, a trip was prepared for students and, with the help of modern GPS applications, we then generated data. In terms of mobility, we introduced national and regional specifics, became more familiar with both countries and, above all, partner cities, and the mobility participants prepared a series of quizzes and workshops for their friends. At the end of the project, within the framework of Informatics, we created animations with a focus on healthy lifestyle. The project was completed by a final conference, attended by teachers from different schools, community representatives and parents. All participating pupils and educators had a unique opportunity to work and communicate outside their own countries, to develop key competencies, skills and knowledge through non-formal education outside of their own schools and classrooms. An important part was the deepening of communicative and language skills, an increase in ICT literacy and a comparison of the level of education in both countries and schools.
