Project Summary
The Stand Against Drugs project introduced participants to the essential concepts and skill sets associated with universal drug abuse prevention programmes through youth work in order to make great strides in developing both the knowledge and the tools that can stem the tide of drug abuse and curb its devastating effects on young people; an objective related to the prevention of drug consumption and drug-related problems among young people of the EU strategy on drugs between 2013-2020. The project allowed participants to grasp the complex challenges of drug abuse on social, educational, cultural and personal development among young people by viewing these issues through the lens of youth work and youth participation that recognize multiple forms of universal drug abuse prevention programmes, essential to developing sustainable solutions to address drug abuse problems that European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction drew attention to in its 2015 report.Since the later daunting drug abuse problems are likely to be paired with any number of other difficulties in young people’s lives: they may be on the verge of dropping out of school or already have dropped out; their family lives often are chaotic; sometimes their parents themselves abuse drugs; they may actually be living on the streets or in shelters, etc. Thus, how can these youth be prevented from abusing drugs? What are their special needs and what kind of drug abuse prevention programs can help them? Hence, the project was designed to seek answers to these questions through universal drug abuse prevention programmes that are meant for everyone in a youth association, a youth center, a school, a community, or a similar group to reduce the overall prevalence of drug abuse. During the project activities, participants looked at some of case studies, did desktop research to collect information and learn about strategies to apply to help bring young people back from the brink of drug abuse.
