Project Summary
The best time to teach children democratic principles such as justice, cooperation, importance of rules and laws is at secondary school years. Especially 12 -14 aged children are more willing to learn these concepts; political behavior and self-awareness begin to emerge in this period. The attitudes of adult people to civil affairs, their interest in developments in the World and in their participation in democracy set as example for children.
With this project, we aim to teach students about civic responsibilities, such as voting and participating in community life within the framework of democratic values; we strive to provide students with basic democratic values such as solidarity, respect, equality, tolerance and further instill in students fundamental democratic values like freedom, respect, tolerance, equality, solidarity. Although the decisionmaking mechanism of young people is legal, this behavior is not sufficient to strengthen participation. We need to raise children’s awareness at an early age to improve civic engagement. Only in this way, we can increase participation by instilling democratic principles. We, as 5 project partners, are united in the same goal. We want our students to learn about democratic rights and freedoms by experiencing.
Therefore, we are planning 4 student exchanges an one joint-staff training event(C5).
C1 – Identity (individual, national and European) and democracy
C2 – Political life and Democracy:Manpower,election and decision-making mechanisms.
C3 – Civic participation and Democracy .
C4 – The mechanisms of justice- Human rights research /Constructive discussion and discourse
C5 –To create a new course curriculum on education and democracy to ensure continuity
The main purpose of this project is to provide opportunities for all students regardless of nationality and social background, to provide them with information about democracy and citizenshipand to create a model for teaching about European facts and awareness. Depending on the activities in the project, the objectives are as follows:
1-To ensure that students understand at least 70% of democratic values in national and Europe.
2-To increase students’ awareness of cultural differences.
3-To develop students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills.
4-To form the basis of the cooperation of schools with NGO. (At least 5 schools – NGO partnership)
5-To strengthen the link between schools and local governments.
6-To strengthen students’ communication skills in English.
7-To provide an optional new curriculum for teaching democracy and citizenship.
Students – in the target group 12-14. These students constitute the selection pool at the beginning of the project. Once we present the project details to them, we will encourage them to participate actively in either the local or the transnational events. (96 Direct, 600 indirect)
Teachers – some teachers will be directly involved in the management of the project, with clear duties such as implementation, communication with partners, preparation of students, evaluation of students and activities, monitoring the implementation plan. Each team will be made up of a minimum 3 people, up to 5 people. (40 Direct, 200 indirect)
Parents – a target group of dissemination during parents’ meeting, during school festivities and on other occasions. (300)
School management – an active part in the project. They sign the contract with the National Agency and are informed about all project activities. (40)
The project will be managed at 5 categories, each corresponding to a partner school. The project’s coordination of will be done by the Italian partner who finalizes and submits the application. We will provide partners with step-by-step action plans and monitor the realization of the project activities through the checklistudents sent to them every two months. If an activity is incomplete, the partner has to explain the reason and date of its delay. We will also create a distribution plan for the entire project, in which partners must adapt to their local situation. We will use Dropbox or Google disk for everyone to access their management documents. By this way, all partners can easily see each other’s work and progress.
One of the objectives of the project is to train the participant spirit of the students, to participate in the life of the society and to contribute to their development in the medium and long term. In this context, the project will result in a closer link between the school and the local community and will connect with local NGOs, where we will have joint initiatives in the future. Schools will be more active actors in the local community.
In addition, schools will develop curriculum offers with the new Democracy and Citizenship curriculum that will be used in the coming years. While this will make us different from other schools in the region, we will also encourage us to use other schools
