Project Summary

In recent years, the number of graduates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) studies decreased despite governmental sponsored programs to make scientific and technical studies more attractive. What is more, especially the number of female graduates didn’t increase and is still significantly low in comparison to male students.
We are of the opinion, that all children are naturally interested in science and technology and that it would be from utmost importance to nourish this interest from an early age level on. Studies show that especially lower secondary girls lose motivation in STEM-related subjects. Moreover, it is proved that girls decide against following science and technology careers due to a lack of female role models.

As secondary teachers, we have the chance to revive that innate inquiring mind of children by giving them the time, structure and framework for acquiring and enhancing understanding and self-confidence when it comes to natural science and technology.

The present project is conceived to develop STEM activities that favor these learnings. We incorporate art with the aim of encouraging critical and creative thinking in our students, working in the so-called STEAM framework. Finally, we add elements of gamification in order to capture the interest of our students and increase their motivation. In the specific aspect of vocations for female students, we will pay special attention to offer reference models, both current and historical, through exhibitions and interviews.

Each partner school will start a Science Club for 12 to 14 year old students to foster STEAM skills (inquiry, critical thinking, dialogue, creativity and innovation). In these clubs, students will face tasks and experiments designed by their teachers following a thread or story under the name of STEAM adventures. These activities will be developed and carried out in each school and will be shared and assessed from students of the partner school. Besides that, each science club will organize a science fair every school year and publish a science magazine including exhibitions and interviews with female scientists. Additionally, students will take their STEAM activities to primary school students and thus spreading motivation, knowledge and skills among even younger children.

On transnational level, this project focus on cooperation between students during Short Term Exchanges (STE) as well as interaction via online tools (e.g etwinning, google classroom, etc). Working together not only means exchanging ideas, planning and assessing STEAM activities but also improving language skills and broadening the horizon by living the European idea and thus get a grip of Europe with all its diversity. Moreover, close cooperation between teachers and students from both countries increase each schools capacity to operate at transnational level, to share and to exchange ideas, good practices and cross-curricular and cooperative learning methodology.
