Project Summary
Project context:
With this two-year project between an Austrian and a Norwegian school, the focus was on health education and digital education in combination with the acquisition of foreign language skills. The realization of this project made it possible for the pupils to acquire or further develop these important key qualifications. In the digital age, unfortunately, more and more students are forgetting to take care of themselves – especially in the areas of exercise and nutrition.
Objectives:
– Goal 1: Improvement of foreign language skills, on the one hand using English as working language, on the other hand through various activities during the project at both school locations
– Goal 2: Strengthening digital skills through the joint creation and distribution of a cookbook, a dictionary and a cooking show (as a video)
– Goal 3: Promotion of personal, social and learning competence through critical reflection on one’s own behavior and the attempt to achieve through continuous questioning that pupils pay more attention to a healthy diet and regular exercise of sport;
Goal 4: Strengthening cultural awareness through the preparation of healthy dishes typical of the country, exercising in the local recreation area and creating a joint cookery book
– Goal 5: Strengthening health through nutrition and sport by raising awareness of one’s own body and the resulting changes in behavior
Number and profile of participants:
– The mobility of Norwegian students and teachers took place in May 2019. 39 schoolgirls between the ages of 15 and 16 took part in this mobility. One student was in a wheelchair, which is why an additional teacher from the Norwegian partner school took part to support the mobility.
Description of the activities:
1) Contacting the students and teachers involved via the Office 365 program
2) linguistic theme weeks to consolidate and deepen the vocabulary from the areas of “Everyday English”, nutrition and sports / leisure activities at both school locations
3) Creation of a common dictionary on the topics covered in English, German and Norwegian via Office 365
4) Exchange between Nord-Odal and BRG Schloss Traunsee – 5 days excluding arrival and departure days with the following activities on site:
– Carry out health-related measures (sport in the local recreation area, healthy nutrition)
– Cooking days with Norwegian and Austrian students at the school
– Video recording of the cooking show, editing (editing techniques, etc.)
– Sports event with parents, teachers, local politicians and press representatives
5) Continuous self-reflection on the relationship between well-being and nutrition in the form of an online tool / questionnaire or diary entries
Methodology for the implementation of the project:
1) Construction of a digital network for the exchange of information
2) Use of the network to create joint products (dictionary, cookbook)
3) Thematic weeks in English lessons with different teaching methods (group work, station operation, …) to expand active and passive vocabulary.
4) Practical work: preparing food, creating a cooking show, practicing various sports in the local recreation area of the two schools
Results:
– higher foreign language skills
– Creation of a joint cookbook in English and a dictionary (English, German, Norwegian)
– Improving digital skills
– Greater awareness of the importance of diet and exercise for increased physical and psychological well-being
Pandemic challenge:
– Due to the corona, the mobility of Austrian students had to be postponed and finally canceled in March 2020
– After virtual meetings with the partner school, work was carried out on a virtual mobility, which should have taken place between the two partner schools in December 2020
– The lock-down and distance learning for the entire upper level (and thus with the students of the Austrian school) made this impossible either
– Due to the fact that the reasonable and health-promoting screen time of many students was far exceeded by distance learning, we finally agreed to forego virtual mobility, especially since its implementation was also made more difficult by the fact that all students were at home and were not allowed to come to the school site.
