Project Summary
The “Summer 2050 – Getting There Together” project was formed by the association of three secondary schools from different European countries, namely Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Teachers have noted among some of their students an increased interest in the issue of climate change and sustainability but students are frustrated at what they perceive as inaction in the world today. Among other students, environmental and sustainability issues are not seen as priorities or necessities in their daily life. The goal of the project is that promoting knowledge on this subject will both create a civic consciousness of the crucial importance of individual actions on climate and at the same time raise curiosity and motivation to go further in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics studies (STEM).
Along with the environmental and climate goals priority, two additional priorities of the project are common values, civic engagement and participation as well as the support of individuals in acquiring and developing basic skills and key competencies. These priorities form the structure upon which the topics of the environment, climate change, energy and resources will be used to develop each student’s key educational competencies (including mathematics, technology and literacy).
Working across three nations within Europe, using both formal and non-formal learning activities, “Summer 2050” will promote the understanding of the European Union context, notably common EU values and the principles of unity and diversity among both the participating students and their wider school environment.
Twelve students from each of the three countries will be actively participating over the course of this two year project. The first year, “Learning for a Sustainable Future” included activities where students will learn some of the historical context of environmental awareness, work together in transnational teams with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, create a project logo, and then use digital tools to learn how to reduce their carbon footprint. Students will then travel to each participating country to learn more about sustainability and to grade each school and community in a “green audit”.
In “Working for a Sustainable Future”, in the second year, students will reflect on what they have learned in the first year of the project before selecting one of the United Nations’ Sustainability Goals and studying how their local community is working with the goal. Their conclusions may lead to suggestions for improvement within their community and even within the partner countries. The major work in the second year of the project will be the production of an eMagazine or eComic where students can share what they have learned with the larger community.During the second set of mobilities, students will re-evaluate the “green audit” from the previous year to see if there have been any improvements.
In the end, it is hoped that the students will share their experiences with their friends, families, peers and even their communities. It is also hoped that some of the students will continue to study STEM subjects to become future agents of change as participating citizens of the European Union.
