Project Summary
Our project entitled “Sustainability and environment protection in French and German everyday life” will allow twenty students from the school “Integrierte Gesamtschule” in Nieder-Olm (Germany) aged 17 and 18 as well as twenty students from the Lycée Condorcet in Schoeneck (France) aged 15 and 16 to reflect together on their way of life and to invent their own future as a European citizen respectful of the environment.
Different activities will be offered to them to help them become aware of their ways of consuming. All the results will be published on the twinspace, integrated into the students’ portfolios and displayed in both schools and presented in local newspapers.
Students will create a logo related to our project during a competition. They will introduce themselves individually on the twinspace so as to choose a exchange partner who suits them, which will allow them to become an actor in the exchange.
A one-day meeting in Mainz (neighboring town of Nieder-Olm) will allow students to meet in person in October. After participating in games to get to know each other, the students will discover the city in small binational groups during a rally and will visit the Gutenberg museum.
Students will work for several weeks on their ways of consuming, focusing on the following aspects: eating habits, daily mobility, consumer goods. The comparison of the results obtained by the French and German students will answer the following question: Are Germans really more ecological than the French?
Whatever the answer, the results will highlight the likely overconsumption in which the students indulge. Work focused around the Christmas holidays will make it possible to wonder how it is possible to consume differently.
This question will be at the heart of the binational meeting in which the students will participate in February in Mainz in a youth hostel. Students will calculate their personal ecological footprint, watch very short films that present different alternatives to the traditional consumption model. They will have an offline experience with traditional board games.
They will create a menu with regional and seasonal products. They will discover Mainz during a photo challenge concerning the ecological aspect of the city. They will watch a film that offers alternative solutions to traditional consumption.
Students will visit the “Mainz 05” stadium on the theme of sustainability. They will create their own ecological concept. Nature will be honored with the creation of a seasonal bouquet. Students can then paint it or go to a tree nursery to ask questions. They will use plants to beautify the schoolyard.
The last day will be dedicated to the press with the writing of articles or the creation of Ebooks. Finally, the students will complete a questionnaire to evaluate the success of the stay and the improvements to be made.
In May, German students will be staying with their French exchange partner. They will visit the school, compare their impressions of the two schools. They will be interested in the evolution of energies and will visit an old coal mine as well as a deferrization station.
Students will test water samples and watch a short video to become aware of the CO2 production of different means of transportation. They will calculate the most ecological way to get to Paris. They will visit a steel mill which invests in hydrogen energy.
The students will go to Paris by train and discover the city by bicycle. They will visit “the roof garden” and the eco district rue de la Fontarabie.
A qualitative comparison of different aesthetic products and the search for chemical preservatives and their potential danger will be offered, as well as a presentation of Condsolaracer (solar vehicle) and the manufacture of a skincare product in high school.
The last day will be dedicated to the press like during the first stay. Students will also create a document to present their good resolutions. We will then be able to assess the scope and success of the entire project. Students will again respond to an online questionnaire.
The month of June will be devoted to a large exhibition in the two scholls to present the project. Thanks to the project, the behavior of students in terms of sustainability and environmental awareness will have changed. They will have developed their communication and adaptation skills. They will also have become aware of belonging to a European society and will be encouraged to conduct international exchanges in Europe in the future.
