Project Summary
Sustainable Schools to Transform Our World (GOALS 2030) is a project which has been set up by four schools showing a diverse degree in the commitment towards the Sustainable Development Goals: from a deeply involved school from Germany, to other schools where some activities regarding this issue are already being implemented, but without the global scope that the SDG provide.
Our project aims at transforming our schools into organisations where sustainability is part of our schools’ corporate identity. Our objectives are to (1) to promote the values of the SDG in our school communities; (2) to transform our organisations into actively engaged schools with the SDG; (3) to broaden the scope of SDG-related professional options for our students; and (4) to create materials and teaching resources for classes, especially regarding those goals which haven’t been sufficiently targeted in schools’ syllabi.
The activities fostered by GOALS 2030 will allow all pupils at the partner schools to gain awareness on global development. Furthermore, we expect to promote the SDG in our local communities by reaching out families and local authorities. Activities will be planned by all school departments, fostering links to all areas and fields of knowledge.
Four short term exchanges of students are planned during the project. These five-day meetings will serve as presentation of the tasks that will be worked on the eTwinning platform forums: exhibitions, games for other students taking part in the mobility, talks and workshops. All these activities will become part of the schools’ teaching materials, as they will be translated into our four national languages. The eTwinning forums will serve as work groups where students will have to cooperate and agree on tasks provided by teachers.
Methodology will consider Project Based Learning and other activities like escape-rooms and gamification. Project tasks will foster challenges that will entail empathy, respect for diversity, social justice, gender equality, protection of the environment and sustainable development.
As results, students will: (1) broaden their practical information about the SDG challenges, thanks to the diverse information from different areas of expertise and subjects; (2) add the values associated to the SDG to their education; (3) learn from examples of social entrepreneurship which already exist in their communities, and participate in activities that local entities promote at all levels, from local to international ones; (4) be agents for change at schools and neighbourhoods, analysing which aspects to target and how to start the transformation; (5) have access to information at first hand from professionals that have focused their careers towards in the field of cooperation for development.
As for teachers, they will: (1) be acquainted with the SDG and gain understanding about how to insert them in the curricula; (2) connect with local resources and organisations, thanks to the activities that will be possible through this project; (3) have at their disposal class materials about the SDG, some of them designed during this project.
Finally, we expect that our schools will add to the organisational documents all needed actions and principles to comply by the values and goals of the SDG. All the project activities will seek to establish initiatives that will continue existing after project conclusion: long-lasting relationships with local entities, professionals, etc., and cross-curricular activities in syllabi.
In the longer term, we envisage not only an increasing awareness in terms of the Sustainable Development Goals at schools, but also to serve as examples for other schools in our regions, and to promote engagement of local authorities with the SDG.
