Project Summary
BACKGROUND:
Regarding practical training programmes in technology, the Berufliche Oberschule Straubing sets its focus on electrical engineering and metal processing. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult for teachers to realize projects in the field of structural and wood engineering due to a lack of appropriate facilities. Wood engineering is a optional part of the official curriculum, though. Having said that, technical training programmes at the Yrkesgymnasiet in Umeå focus exactly on these very fields of engineering. On the other hand, the training programmes in electrical engineering and metal processing are rather insufficient at the Swedish twin school. Subsequently, there was the unique opportunity to realize synergies by using the partners’ skills and facilities to gain competence for both schools. Moreover, both partners will enhance the quality of teaching at their school and therefore benefit from the SBP project in the long run.
TARGETS:
Embedded in a bilateral strategic school partnership, these are the basic targets of the SBP project for the schools in Umeå (Sweden) and Straubing (Germany):
1) Exchange of best-practice-methods in their practical training programmes to improve technical skills
2) Reduction of deficiencies in wood engineering (Straubing) as well as electrical engineering (Umeå) by using the partner’s existing capacities
3) Development of individual skills and self-confidence among students and teachers
4) Sustainable and long-lasting improvement of the education programmes at both schools
5) Promotion of intercultural, linguistic and professional skills among students
The main target of “Synergies of Best Practice” is the utilization of synergies originating from the complementary focus on teaching methods and learning contents. Both school will meet these obligations by creating and distributing instructional videos.
PARTICIPANTS:
YRKESGYMNASIET (Umea – Sweden):
– vocational school
– private institution (Toren Business Schools)
– around 150 students
– 6 recognized occupations: carpenter, hairdresser, mechanic, painter, electrician, plumber
– practical job training
BERUFLICHE OBERSCHULE STRAUBING (Germany):
– vocational school
– public school
– two types of school: Fachoberschule & Berufsoberschule
– around 800 students
– 4 branches: design, social branchl, technical branch, economics
– practical job training
MAIN ACTIVITIES:
a) virtual mobilities:
Concerted planning of technical projects (constructing and fitting a wooden house, constructing and programming a robot) by Swedish and German students, using the online-platform mebis®. Students will realize their drafts in transnational workshops (physical mobilities). They will document every step of procedure and use the footage to create instructional videos.
b) physical mobilites:
Over the course of the project a total number of six blended mobilities will be undertaken to exchange best-practice-methods in a bilateral way. There the drafts of the virtual mobilities (planning phase) were realized:
13. – 17.03.2017: Workshop Electronic Engineering (Straubing)
01. – 05.05.2017: Workshop Wood Engineering (Umea)
08. – 12.05.2017: Workshop Wood Engineering (Umea)
18. – 24.03.2018: Workshop Wood Engineering (Umea)
08. – 14.04.2018: Workshop Wood Engineering (Umea)
14. – 21.05.2018: Workshop Electronic Engineering (Straubing)
RESULTS/EFFECTS:
The project members will implement all workpieces and modules in the teaching programme of both institutions to improve the quality of teaching. The enforcement of their skills should enable students to position themselves in an increasingly internationalizing environment of education. The expansion of the teachers’ skills should result in a reciprocative enhancement of teaching qualifications by using best-practice-methods of different European regions.
SUSTAINABILITY:
By multiplying the gained results to the staff of both schools, developing manuals for teachers, installing best-practice-methods (instructional videos) in compulsory curricula, publishing the results on the schools’ websites as well as in local and regional means of media along with the storage and maintenance of the results on the online-platform mebis® (free of charge), the long term accessibility of the project’s results to a huge number of various people is guaranteed. In this way, the project’s achievements offer a sustainable contribution to the improvement of teaching.
