Project Summary
The project has been a successful cooperation among partners who have worked together in previous Comenius projects, which have already dealt with school development and curriculum-based issues. This was the leading motivation and the idea behind our decision to further develop and strengthen our partnership by planning and completing another project within the Erasmus+ programme. We are a group of five partners evenly scattered across Europe (Austria, France, Germany, Norway and Romania). This group found the project and working together so important that we decided to renew our partnership and apply for a new Erasmus+ project
Our main focus was to raise our students’ awareness on who they are as Europeans by identifying common European/ national values and also to make them familiar with their country’s history concerning migration. We wanted to raise our students’ awareness of how they see others by identifying stereotypes and their dangers. We wanted to motivate them to reflect on how certain ethnic or religious groups are presented in the media/ social media. Our schools have experience with a variety of ethnic and religious groups and we had tasks and activities for our students to become aware of the aspects involved and provide them with the knowledge on how to deal with others in this context. We taught our students about human rights, by giving them tools on how to practically implement integration (not assimilation) thus becoming aware of and showing respect for differences.
Our project has addressed these main priorities with the goal to change and improve the way the different partner schools deal with students from different cultural or national backgrounds. We have worked on motivating our students to integrate themselves into the respective society and to become aware of European values – in short, to acquire skills and knowledge for becoming active European citizens. This is also a priority for our own students.
We have organised sustainable project activities, shared examples of best practice among teachers. We also had activities with students from all partners’ schools and in “normal” classes where we developed and shared good practical teaching and motivating learning activities.
Dissemination activities in the partner schools have been presented to all teachers and implemented as a part of the school’s strategy. Project exhibitions, parents’ days, concerts and other performances have also be organized. With some success, we have worked on presenting the project to the local press, to neighbouring schools through meetings and seminars involving teachers, students and headmasters.
Our aim has been that this project has an important impact on how our partner schools develop in the future in order to raise our pupils’ awareness and strengthen their integration so that our schools will be recognised as schools where respect is of a high priority. This will help increase the quality of teaching and learning for everyone.
