Project Summary
The background of the project “The Electrical Secret of Chemistry” deals with gaining a better understanding of science and technology with the help of scientific thinking as well as one’s own innovations.
It is a scientific, innovative, sustainable and inclusive project that deals with teaching science to around 30 participating students. These students are between the ages of nine and fifteen, both with and without special educational needs. It shows with which means and methods the scientific interest of the pupils can not only be sparked and encouraged, but also how this research stimulates the study of a worldview shaped by science.
The benefit of this project is that the pupils discover the electrical secret of chemistry. They learn scientific working methods by experimenting independently, researching using the internet, analysing, and evaluating. Taking into account the relevance of MINT skills in the labour market, it provides students with competitive advantages. The methodology is research-orientated learning.
Students will learn that the electrical secret of chemistry is the electrons of atoms. They can build batteries and understand how electric vehicles work. In addition, they can explain the source and the context of electricity.
During the visit of the Belgian partners in Vienna the following activities were organised (project-week 9.3. – 13.3.2020):
– In the mornings hands-on workshops on the project topic took place.
– The afternoons were used for related field trips and social activities.
All participants could gain valuable experiences and lasting impression:
– Besides the hands-on learning by doing and the research-oriented classes, the students have applied and enhanced key competences like communication, teamwork and foreign language skills. In addition, they have learned to take on new perspectives which the intercultural exchange also contributed to. The project thus promotes the pupils’ sense of belonging to the European community. It creates the conditions for an active citizenship, for an intercultural dialogue as well as for social integration and solidarity.
– As the students of the leading organisation are predominantly from uneducated and socially deprived families, the project also contributes to reducing disadvantage by enabling them to meet and exchange at the European level.
– The teachers of the coordinating school gained experience in international projects and realized the potential of Erasmus+. Therefore, a new and permanent project team was established in order to coordinate the school´s Erasmus+ issues and to ensure continuity within the organisation.
Though the Covid-19 crisis prevented the realisation of all planned project-activities (e.g. visit in Belgium), the project was successfully completed and has already had a long-term impact (e.g. in the leading organisation permanent structures for Erasmus+ activities have been established).
