Project Summary

Our Erasmus + project is entitled “The ideal garden in our city”. The question we will ask ourselves and which we will try to answer is the realization of gardens preserving biodiversity and heritage in urban areas in the countries of the European Union. The aim is to examine the place of green spaces in cities, to understand the importance of preserving ecosystems and the environment, to understand the climatic, environmental and cultural particularities of each country in order to create a garden that would preserve all these elements.
This interdisciplinary project, which will take place from September 2019 to August 2021, will integrate three schools from three different European countries: College Louis Armand in France, Castro Marim School Group in Portugal and Don Lorenzo Milani Secondary School in Italy. The languages of communication will be English and Spanish but we also plan introductory courses in the three languages of the participating countries.
The first meeting in Portugal, in October 2019, will involve only the teachers of the project who will draw up the program at a logistic level and eductional level . Then there will be three learning activities involving short-term exchanges of groups of students aged between 12 and 14 years old. Each mobility will bring together about 30 students as well as 6 teachers:
– in March 2020 in Italy
– in October 2020 in Portugal
– in March 2021 in France.
During each mobility, students will work on the peculiarities of the environment, climate and culture of the host country and, in theory, by working in multinational groups but also in practice by visiting existing gardens. In addition, each country will work in their school on the theme of the garden in the city, which will have an impact on the entire educational community.
During each learning activity, participants will be able to share and report on their research, visit places, to make a connection with the project, discuss the subject and propose ideas for the final creation. Students, as well as teachers, will have the opportunity to discover the cultural and historical heritage of each region, as well as the language of the country.
The various workshops (of arts, technology, gardening etc …), the researches and the lessons will enable the participants to create 3 models (one for each participating country) which will represent their ideal garden in their city and will write a presentation of these in English and Spanish. These achievements will be presented to the mayors of partner schools.
The objectives of this project are many and varied:
– for students: higher self-confidence, in English but also on an interpersonal level (development of linguistic and communicational skills) / development of transversal and digital skills, better awareness of responsible European citizenship.
– for teachers: professional development through collaboration with teachers from other European countries and the discovery of other school systems
– for schools: a stronger dynamic inside the school (through teamwork) and outside the school (better visibility and attractiveness thanks to the dissemination work).
Our project will integrate students from all social backgrounds and it will involve as many students as possible in order to estaablish emulation and thus prevent school dropout. Following the presentation of the models to the mayors, the partner schools will keep in touch to follow the realization or the adaptation of the students’ proposals in the cities concerned. This project will enable us to initiate a collaboration that we believe will continue once our objectives are achieved.
