Project Summary
Everyone has to deal with the matter of means of transport and the use of information technology (IT) daily. Both schools involved in the project come from transit regions. Šluknovský výběžek is a border region with plenty of engineering companies. They regularly deal with an issue of freight transport of material and goods. Ostróda is an industrial city historically connected to water transport.
The project ‘The Journey Is the Destination’ was the outcome of long-term cooperation. Each partner school chose 8 students and 2/4 teachers who participated in the project. Some of the students came from the socially disadvantaged environment.
The main objective was an exchange of methodology and good practices in the field of logistics and information technology. The project aimed to raise awareness of ways and specific requirements of road and water transport and to deepen the knowledge of the partners’ cultures at the same time. The choice of the project goal was related to the regional specifics. A subsequent objective was to embed gained experience, outcomes and examples of good practice into the education process. Knowledge and skills were passed on in the form of peer-to-peer learning among students and teachers, as well.
Particular activities:
Two international meetings took place in the project (one in the Czech Republic and the other in Poland). A series of professional workshops on logistics and information technology took place during these meetings. The topics of planned workshops were logistical processes, types of road transport and essential components of ICT which are necessary for correct data flow and time-saving. The project teams arranged visits in local transport and logistics companies in both countries which helped students to understand obstacles in creating a database – concerning both logistics and database systems. Students visited two companies in the Czech Republic and one in Poland. During the meeting in Poland, an educational excursion to the seaport and a ferry cruise took place. Students developed a web application. Mutual communication and cooperation strengthened working, professional and language competencies of all participants. At the end of each meeting, the feedback was gathered from the students and teachers which resided in the evaluation of the project progress as well as the project contribution.
The main project result was to create a web application which, on request, manually collects logistics data on executed international freight transport. The app generates a statistical analysis of the collected data. The architecture of the web application is the client-server model.
Additional project results consist of educational materials which were created and used during the project activities (mainly in the form of presentation) and cover topics of road and water transport logistics and associated legislation of both countries. Students made a time-lapse video during the project activities and published it after the end of the project.
Creating an eTwinning account, project website and social media profiles (Facebook, Instagram) build public awareness of the project and help to spread the project results. Both schools’ websites also inform about the project. The website and social media profiles map the progress of the whole project and its particular phases. Students made a video of the project activities and working progress.
The dissemination of the project results involved local media depending on the participants’ possibilities (e.g. a local newspaper ‘Hlas severu‘, ‚Krajské noviny‘, ‚MF Dnes‘ in the Czech Republic and similar media in Poland). The project results were also presented at school events, on the open days at both schools and during the cooperation with lower-secondary schools. Visitors of these events or pupils were provided with information about the project and also created materials.
Both schools acquired new competencies in international project management which can be used in future projects. Some of the activities (logistic information system, working with data) were reflected in the lessons of participating teachers. That way, the interdisciplinary based experiences were passed on other students outside the project. Participating students spread good practice among the other students and the public. The project results are used for the education process on both sides.
