Project Summary

The project “International World of Work in Transition” explores the impact of globalisation, digitalisation and climate change on the world of work in Germany and Finland. Specifically, German and Finnish students in the respective partner country work on content from the curriculum during their mobility: ecology, economy and society. This gives students from both countries an insight into the country-specific developments of the respective partner and can thus get a comparison of the respective effects on the world of work. The project is on the one hand in the field of vocational orientation of the students, but on the other hand in the development of professional representations, related to the above-mentioned contents. Here they are supported methodically and organizationally by the teachers and the results are included in the subsequent lessons. The topic of “World of Work in Transition” in the field of politics and economics in high school is supplemented by practical experience.

The central objective of the project is the technical development of the changed world of work in relation to the aspects of globalization, digitalization and climate change.

In addition, the project pursues further sub-objectives:
– Dealing with your own choice of studies and careers
– Training of the digital competence of the participants
– Promoting intercultural competence
– The project corresponds to an international cooperation between two schools on the basis of development cooperation.

The project produces different products, the development and production of which are necessary for the achievement of the main objective and the sub-objectives. In the end, a multimedia exhibition is developed in the school in order not only to convey the results of the investigations to the classroom, but also to make them accessible to the general public. This happens during the last mobility in C4, when the Finnish students visit Germany.

The cross-border use of the learning platform moodle enables the cooperation in the run-up to the meeting as well as its follow-up as a digital work platform. In addition, the students are to create Instagram profiles about the explored occupational fields in both countries.
The results are also documented in a guide close to the student. This guide can be used by the project participants as well as by subsequent school years. Thus, we expect students to be experts until the end, who also provide advice to the younger students in the vocational orientation process as a student counsellor.

Teachers also benefit from the work and the results, as the resulting products, such as interviews and testimonials, are processed in the aftermath and can thus be used as teaching and counselling material. The TU Darmstadt in the field of teacher education can be scientifically monitored by our cooperation partner and vocational and study counselling can be further developed in accordance with current requirements. Other extracurricular partners will play a role in the project: German-Finnish Society, Chamber of Commerce South Hesse, Technical University Darmstadt, Odenwald Regional Society, Odenwald Industrial Association as well as companies and companies in which, for example, the expert interviews.

The mobility will take place during the project period of 2 years. In order to be able to accompany the students in concrete terms, the teachers need thematic training during the project.

Five German and five Finnish students from the E-phase are taking part in the project. Three German teachers and two Finnish teachers accompany them. The teachers work in the socio-scientific department of the respective school and will then implement the results developed afterwards.

The college of the school, parents and an interested public are constantly involved in the project. In addition, publications are published in the regional media. Since the project work relates to the world of work, local companies which are not directly involved in the work will also have a certain interest in the results. Although the changing world of work is a policy-theoretical subject area, it is of practical relevance in companies, especially in rural areas.

In addition to the technical work, the knowledge gains for linguistic and digital competences are central for the participants. The planned combination with a cultural accompanying programme in the partner country also enables learning processes in the intercultural field, both students and teachers.
