Project Summary
“Towards Gender Sensitive Education” was a three-year-long project implemented by five organisations from three EU countries – Masaryk University (Czech Republic), Gender Information Centre NORA (Czech Republic), Hungarian Women’s Lobby (Hungary), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) and Verein EfEU (Austria) – in a strategic partnership.
The consortium consisted of organizations widely experienced in working with (future) teachers, gender issues or/and drama techniques. It was a unique collaboration of non-profit organizations and universities.
The main objective of the project was to enhance the gender sensitivity of current and future teachers through developing, piloting and disseminating a methodology for training in gender-sensitive education.
The project was targeted at current and future teachers and aimed to help them develop their competences in dealing with gender diversity and equity in their classroom.
Throughout the project, three interconnected intellectual outputs were developed: 1) Comprehensive comparative research study that maps the situation of gender in education within the three involved countries 2) Handbook for teacher trainers that describes more than fifty useful activities for enhancing gender-sensitivity of (future) teachers and that provides scenarios of five different courses on gender-sensitive education 3) Five awareness-raising videos about different aspects of gender inequality in education.
The Comparative report provides useful insights into the political and cultural context of the involved countries that were used in the development of the Handbook and Videos. The development of the Handbook for teacher trainers involved piloting activities in practice. Ten courses – five for future teachers and five for current teachers – were held. More than 100 participants of the courses raised their awareness of the importance of gender-sensitive education, understood gender bias and its effects on individuals and schools, and became able to put into action their newly acquired gender knowledge and attitudes to create equitable classrooms. Some of the course participants afterwards helped with developing the Handbook and dissemination of the project results. At the end of the project, nine successful multiplier events for various audiences were held and helped in establishing new channels of possible future cooperation in the field of gender-sensitive education.
