Project Summary

The project “Traces – Learning from past racism for a tolerant present and future” is a school partnership of Instituto dos Pupilos do Exéercito (PT), Zespól Szkól w Kiertrzu (PL), Istituto d’Istruzione Superiore Majorana (I) and Kaufmansschule II (D) about anti racism and tolerance within the framework of a European identity. The participating schools aim at the individual development of each student in the areas of knowledge, awareness, communication and behaviour. The intention is to increase pupils’ knowledge about the history of discrimination by the state in the participating countries and their shared history. This leads to a new way of thinking about history and facilitates new ways of looking at history from different perspectives. The historical perspectie will raise pupils’ awareness of the current challenges Europe faces but also of the importance of common democratic values and human rights. This project focuses on these objectives: 1. Increase knowledge about history and draw conclusions for the present and the future; 2. raise awareness of segregation by working in an international group and reflecting; 3. enhance communication skills by workshops and writing guidelines; 4. experience new ways of learning by taking part in visits to places of remembrance and creating our own products. During the project the following activities will be carried out with the pupils to achieve these objectives: 1. Gaining historical knowledge and learing about one’s responsibility for the future by developing a blueprint for a European history book; 2. Learning from places of remembrance by visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp and creating works of art and guidelines about it; 3. Gain information about the Righteous in each participating countries and think about a place of remembrance at each school; 4. Raise awareness about the reasons for remembrance by contributing to a Remembrance Ceremony in an international group. All results will be published on our public TwinSpace which will supplement our virtural TwinSpace classroom. The results will also include guidelines on how to visit a concentration camp, how to do historical research in an international perspective, how to make intercultural communication work, how to use places outside the school building for learning, how to foster a European identiy and a list of all resources used for this project. The project will be documented by films published on the youtube channel of the German school who is coordinating the project. All schools are interested in developing a long-term extra-curricular activity about remembrance.
