Project Summary
Schizophrenia (SCZD) is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting > 21 million people worldwide. Treatment with medicines and psychosocial support is effective. However, > 50% of Persons with Schizophrenia (PwSCZD) are not receiving appropriate care (WHO. Schizophrenia.Factsheets)
4 forms of coercion interventions have been usually used for handling SCZD crisis; Seclusion;Mechanical Restraint;Physical Restraint;Involuntary Medication/Chemical Restraint (Crisis (Seclusion and Restraint Reduction Strategy. Mental Health Commission Ireland)
According to the existing policies, regulations and trends, the use of coercive measures is being reduced at mental health settings (both at hospital and residential levels). However, what is happening in domiciliary environments?
ZeroCoercion is launched with the main objective of increasing the competences (attitudes, knowledge, skills) of PwSCZD, Relatives and Mental Health Professionals (MPH) for handling Schizophrenia Crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion
Specific objectives are to:
• Create awareness on rights and trust on reducing coercion
• Transfer available existing strategies for handling SZCD crisis without coercive practices and their application n domiciliary environments
• Promote self-management and also cooperation among PwSCZD, Relatives and MHP
• To train PwSCZD and Relatives as Peer Supports
Through the execution of this Project the next results will be obtained;
• Co-Created Methodological Guide (I.O.1) will be developed, involving the direct participation of End Users, with the main objective of determining the key contents, methodologies and tools needed for creating and improving the critical competences of Persons with Schizophrenia (PwSCZD), Relatives and Mental Health Professionals (MHP) about how to handle Schizophrenia crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion
• Training Materials (I.O.2) addressed to PwSCZD, Relatives and MHP about how to handle Schizophrenia crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion
• Designed Experiential Training Activities (I.O.3); They will be the core of the Training Program and they will enhance the practical and experiential training of PwSCZD, Relatives and MHP, including the optimal and oriented exploitation of aforementioned Training Materials within real environments.
Designed Experiential Training Activities (DETAs) will be specifically ADDRESSED TO TRAINERS, including guidelines for its implementation and conduction and how to properly use the Training Materials developed in I.O.2
DETAs will include the design of Face-to-Face and Online Sessions, based on (1) Group Dynamics and (2) Practical Activities, and, specially, (3) Experiential Activities, where PwSCZD and Relatives will directly implement strategies for handling SZCD crisis without coercive practices in domiciliary environments with the support of MHP, while increasing their competences through putting into practice methods and tools during the Training Activities
• Development of an e-Training Platform (I.O.4), for supporting the implementation of the Training Methodology, including Training Materials, Online Activities, Workspace
• Creation of 6 ZeroCoercion UNITS in the Associations working with PwSCZD in order to ensure the sustainable exploitation of the project after the project lifetime.
• Implementation of 6 Multiplier Events in how to handle Schizophrenia crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion
• Development of Dissemination Actions addressed to the European collective related to SCZD and other mental health problems
VALIDATION PILOT ACTIONS will be implemented involving 120 persons (20 in Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Lithuania, Greece and Estonia) including PwSCZD, Relatives and MPH for validation of the project results
Impact of Validation Actions during project lifetime
In the short term, the project will increase the competences of 120 Persons, including Persons with Schizophrenia, Relatives and MHP (20 in Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and Greece)
Impact of Dissemination Actions during project lifetime
3.000 persons related with the Mental Health Sector (500 in Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and Greece) will be aware, through multiplier events and dissemination actions to be carried on through the project website, newsletters, leaflets, etc…
