Project Summary
The main goal of the very new Partnership under the Erasmus+ programme is to provide non-specialists ( i.e. parents, teachers, social workers, caregivers and others who work with refugee children) and professionals operating in the field of psychosocial and mental support services with comprehensible information about trauma and what they can do to support traumatized refugee children.
The coordinating organization is Czechs for Syria based in the Czech Republic and represented by Katerina Honzikova, MA. Participating organizations are Polish Fundacja EMIC, Turkish Hope Revival Organization and Italian Hayat Organization. The project will be implemented both in Europe and Turkey.
There is significant trauma in child refugees and not enough experts in Europe and in Turkey. Therefore, we aim to provide professional, yet simple and comprehensible information about what professionals and even non-professionals can do to alleviate or resolve trauma. For this purpose, experts from the coordinating organization have adapted and translated into Arabic the book Trauma Proofing Your Kids by P. Levine and M. Kline from the USA, written for the parents of traumatized children and caregivers. The original book has been translated into 11 languages.
For those who do not have the capacity to read all 271 pages of the book, the coordinating organization have put together a pilot 40-page Trauma Handbook, containing the most important and condensed information from the original book, including around 40 games and activities for children that help to release traumatic stress through play, and a pilot Trauma Picture Book in Arabic, English and Italian. The Trauma Picture Book is mainly designed for refugee parents. In the first stage of the project, these materials will be piloted and adapted to the needs of the target group, relevant caregivers, and traumatized refugee families.
In the course of the project, we will pilot and adapt a complementary experiential training workshop and develop an innovative methodology about how the publications and relevant methods can be delivered to other caregivers, i. e. parents, teachers, social workers etc.
During the follow-up phase of the project period, the Partnership will focus on dissemination, by cooperating with relevant NGOs or other stakeholders (e. g. public bodies) operating in the field of refugee care, present the final and published trauma materials and experiential training workshops and establish a wider network for long-term cooperation.
