Project Summary

Within the project „Travelling without borders – our barrier-free travel guides” three special needs schools with focus on cognitive functions from Hungary, the Netherlands and Germany put their ideas on the subject of barrier free travel into practice. The suitable implementation of rights and the possibilities for travel and leisure activities in the local area of each school were investigated. In all three schools, pupils with various special needs such as autism spectrum disorders, severe and multiple disabilities and social-emotional disorders are taught.
The three schools, working closely together, each produced a barrier-free travel guide for their region within an ultimate project time of three years. The travel guides have been created in cooperation with local tourist boards and are available to the public; they are also connected online enabling as many people with disabilities as possible to be an inclusive part of society.
Pupils explored their local area with their teachers and discovered the leisure activities which are particularly suitable for people with special needs and which are barrier-free. ‘Barrier-free’ means not only accessibility for people using a wheelchair, but also encompasses the simplified usability of travel spots with easy-to-understand signs, pictograms, sign language interpreters or film clips in simplified language. Such conditions offer people with special needs inclusive travel.
Suitable activities from the fields of culture, food and drink and sport were tested by each school and the results presented to the other schools. The design of the guides was then jointly developed.
In addition to the inclusive participation in society, the pupils were able to learn about the culture, language and characteristics of their European neighbours.
The cooperation with the local tourist boards throughout the project, from its concept through to the distribution of the guides, ensures its sustainability after the Erasmus+ project is concluded. Further cooperation is planned and the participants are already known as experts for inclusive leisure activities.
