Project Summary
In the course of the project “TWIN – The Wall – Information about Europe” students from Germany, Italy, Poland and Hungary built 2 x 2 m sized video walls containing a European information system. The video walls were installed in the recreational areas of the respective schools. All students, employees and guests were able to inform themselves about the European Union on their smartphones, while the information was displayed simultaneously on the video wall.
This program helped to improve the MINT skills in the context of European cooperation. The students extended their knowledge about the European Union in a task-related way and gained a better understanding of the countries involved. International teams were formed in the course of educational, teaching and learning activities, thus enabling the participants to enhance their intercultural skills. The common language used was English. The students were able to use and extend their knowledge of English. Due to the educational focus on electronics, electrical engineering and computer science that all students involved have in common, the project helped to sharpen their professional profile.
To realize the planned construction, a project-oriented approach was chosen, divided into different phases according to the respective tasks. On this basis and considering the educational focus of the schools involved, four educational, teaching and learning activities took place, one at each school involved. Part of the work on the project took place in class, to prepare the educational, teaching and learning activities accordingly. Six to eight students, as well as two teachers, took part in each educational, teaching and learning activity. All in all about 250 students were involved in the construction of the video walls.
Specification sheets, Gantt charts and construction plans were produced, bids for the cost of material were compared. The students planned and built a video wall with LED modules and control PCBs. Useful information about the European Union was gathered for presentation on the video wall. Additionally, the microprocessor and a suitable smartphone app were programmed. There was a test phase preceding the launch to be able to correct mistakes and generate error protocols.
In order to document the project results and promote identification with the project a website and a project logo were designed.
The project resulted in a greater interest regarding European questions and other EU countries, as well as a better understanding of foreign cultures and languages.
The schools involved opened up to other European countries. School life was substantially enriched by follow-up projects like student exchanges and job shadowing. Three of the four schools involved in the project are connected by town twinning arrangements. This project supports the European and cultural commitment of the towns. The long-term benefit in terms of material profit is that every school now possesses a video wall with a European information system, which can be navigated by a smartphone app.
