Project Summary
This UNION project’s main objective is to integrate our migrants into our schools in order to give them an orientation, a future job by breaking down the stereotypes conveyed in our society and especially in our schools. Four countries (France, Spain, Italy and Poland) met on the Etwinning network around the same observation: the difficulty we have, as teachers, to transfer knowledge to allophone students in our classes. By allophone students, we mean the EANA (newly arrived allophone students) and the NSA (not previously educated) who have everything to learn. We see the number of migrants increasing each year (52,000 this year in France) and we feel helpless and on our own in our schools. We have therefore decided to react by writing this project, which has several objectives:
– to improve our way of teaching by pooling our documents and tools through the creation of a specialized blog and by researching new forms of pedagogy to change our practices in order to better integrate our migrant students within our schools.
– disseminate this project to our superiors (Ministry, Rectorate, Educational Agencies …) to alert the authorities on this migration crisis that impacts our schools and our students
– to train our students to be tolerant citizens. They should be aware of European / global issues on racism and religious discrimination which are increasing in our societies nowadays. At the European Immigration Summit in June 2018, no concrete solution was found.
– to fight against everyday stereotypes and make students think about them
It is important to remember that the role of the school is to promote dialogue between different cultures and to value differences by going beyond the clichés created by the world around us.
In order to achieve these different objectives, each partner has decided to involve 20 volunteer students in addition to our allophone students, who will be followed by a team of 10 adults from the educational team but also by the French school nurses and social worker. The Students involved will be around 12 to 14 years old. We want our partnership to have a lasting impact on our students, in the hope that this experience will make them more open and ready for future multinational projects.
For this project, we have chosen to include many activities including a board game on the theme of stereotypes and tolerance. We also intend to take part in various European actions, such as : participation in the Olympics against racism in Spain; writing raps against discrimination in Italy and recording the CD in France; carrying out an advertising campaign on the rights of migrant children in Poland. There will also be two final tasks for European schools: the creation of a kit for the integration of allophones in our schools for parents, students and teaching teams; the creation of an “Allophones in Europe” blog where each country will contribute and enrich educational materials on this site. In order to be sure of the feasibility of these activities, a detailed schedule has been drawn up setting the objectives to be reached month by month for each partner before and after the mobilities. Students will exchange and publish the project on Twinspace. This will be open to the public for a better dissemination of results (its link will be on the schools’ websites). Teachers and coordinators will manage the administrative aspect via the project’s Google Drive where all media and reports will be listed. Data and educational tools for allophone students will be published on the project’s blog. The number of visitors to this blog will be an indicator of the demand and visibility of this project. During the mobilities, we have decided that our students should be accommodated by host families in order give them an opportunity to embrace other ways of life. The sharing of experiences and learning through this contact with other cultures will allow students to create a European identity, which is very important for our immigrant students. The impact in our schools will be links with immigrant families who may not dare come to meet the educational teams because of the language barrier and their difficult social situation. The teachers involved in this project will be able to give lectures and train their colleagues in the surrounding schools in the adapting their teaching to allophone pupils. The purpose of this project is to be reinforced later by concentrating more on teacher pedagogy and the tools put at teachers’ disposal.
