Project Summary
This project was based on the observation that at the end of secondary school our students and their parents have to make important decisions about their child’s course choice and they come across a huge number of questions. What are their skills? What pathway should they choose? Should they go for long or short studies ? What are the job prospects ?etc. And if they have not been assisted individually in choosing their course it may lead to misunderstandings. Some students and their family may even feel distressed or have the feeling that they don’t have any real choice.
The first goal of this project was to allow students to start reflecting on the choice of their future. We wanted to help them develop their career objectives and open their minds to the possibilities that could be offered abroad thanks to the “cadre européen”. We also knew that this project would enrich their historical and cultural backgrounds as they would meet young people and professionals from the countries involved in this project and indeed, each country brought its own specificities!
Representatives of 5 different countries participated in this project: 4 secondary schools from Romania, France, Italy, Turkey and a six form college from Spain. All these schools were different in terms of number of students, location, courses offered, subjects taught, etc . But they were also complementary (school population, courses, income group…).
5 groups of 20 students have participated almost simultaneously in these activities and in the assessment of the project. The teams working on this project have tried to lead students to reconsider their vision of studies and course choices/career plans. The Erasmus + students have acquired and developed skills and knowledge with the variety of activities prepared by the team project:
– discovering different professions (through individual research, meetings with professionals with a tour of their company, visits to museums, career fairs)
– discovering the different pathways offered by schools around their living area ( with a tour of six form colleges, interviews with six form students and career counselors)
– discovering school systems abroad and reviewing the possibilities of studying or working in Europe (through the exchange with our partners, interviewing foreign students or by attending courses in other European countries)
– getting to know someone who is both a stranger and a foreigner which induced an important work on prejudices and clichés. (welcoming an exchange partner, learning vocabulary and key sentences from the other countries, participating to the Erasmus + evenings, etc.)
– improving their French and English (worksheets in French for all the students, video conference via Skype, etc.)
– developing their proficiency in I.C.T (blog, articles, video, power point presentations…)
At the end of this two-year-project students have acquired more autonomy, opened their minds on their career plans and found a pathway in relation with their skills and abilities. Moreover, all the participants have made their own ‘European course choice & career plan folder’ with recap cards on a variety of professions, details on companies, tools to write a cover letter, tools to study/work abroad (what we refer to as ‘European mobility’) , useful words and expressions from the other countries involved, articles, recipes, etc. )
We are delighted to observe that all our work and efforts have led to a real mobility dynamic since official school pairings and exchanges have emerged from this project (Romania /France / Spain) , as well as future e-twinning projects (Romania / France / Turkey).
