Project Summary

Context and objectives:
This project was designed to improve students’ critical thinking, their awareness of being an active citizen. By taking actively part in the project the students were able to heighten their self-competence and improve their natural science, technical and digital competences. These goals were achieved when students dealt with different topics around the field “bicycle”.
The practical approach went beyond the usual methods used in school and the students learned by experiencing how knowledge can be directly applied, e.g. in bicycle maintenance. With their commitment to improvements in the bicycle infrastructure, they experienced how they can help shape policy.

The project consisted of 4 sub-topics to be worked on by all students together for 6 months each:
1. Bike mobility in European cities
• visit to an exhibition on global cycling
• investigation and comparison of bicycle traffic in exemplary European cities
• researching the influence of urban planning on bicycle-friendliness, advantages and disadvantages of different modes of transport.
• investigation of increasing car traffic
• creation of plans by using digital tools like maps and drawing programmes
transnational meeting in Germany

2. Bike maintenance
• learning basic methods of bicycle maintenance and repair in theory and practice.
• studying basic methods of bike maintenance in theory as well as in practice.
• creating video tutorials about bike maintenance
• Participation in a bicycle fair with, among other things, repair instructions for visitors
• “Pit stop” campaign: spontaneous short maintenance for cycling citizens
• teaching fellow students and elementary pupils how to repair and look after their bikes
• excursion to local bike shops
transnational meeting in Italy

3. Transport situation in hometown
• analysing the transport situation in their own towns
• collection of suggestions for improvement from members of the school family as well as citizens of the city
• development of improvement proposals for safe and fast cycling.
• meeting with the decision-makers for cycling in the city administration.
• presentation of the project in the city’s bicycle forum
• meeting with local police on road safety
• setting up a “do it yourself” repair station at the school’s bicycle parking area
transnational meeting in the Netherlands

4. Motivation
• planning and implementing activities to motivate the school family to use bicycles regularly.
• producing creative, motivational photos and videos
• redesigning the school’s own bicycle parking area
transnational meeting in Lithuania
