Project Summary

The International English School, Västerås and Escola Nova Povill first became acquainted on the E-Twinning platform in 2018. The solidity of the relationship between the project’s Swedish and Spanish schools comes from our mutual benefits; our school having English as our main language, gives us a competitive advantage to offer our Spanish partners. The Spanish environment provides a unique experience of immersion into an all Spanish context and the southern European culture for Nordic students.
Not only will allow students from Spain and from Sweden to develop their spoken skills of the target language, but there will also be plenty of opportunity for teachers of both countries to learn good teaching practises from each other, which will, in turn, assure sustainability and lifelong learning.
The aim of this joint project Verbal interaction is to combine the two schools’ experiences, expertise and efforts in teaching two of the greatest European languages. Spanish is secondary to English in the Swedish school and the other way around in our partner school in Spain. Our goal is to instill in our students the confidence and competence to express themselves as well verbally as they do in reading and writing in the target language. Spanish and English are two of the greatest languages in Europe, and this project sees the opportunity and benefits of co-learning across the borders. The project is planned for 24 months, during which four exchanges will take place and a number of joint digital lessons will take place. This project also teaches teachers of the two languages to better encourage and motivate students, through collegial learning.

Participants of this projects are students from year 8, but there will also be some local activities in year 6, concerning the importance of being competent and confident verbally in a second language. 23 students from year 8 will take part of the physical exchange, but all students of Spanish/English will take part in activities in their own school.

The student activities include oral presentations, videos, music and reflection on identity, traditions, school and social life. For example, the presentations will take place online, through video clips made by students in their target language for peer reviewing by the students in the other school. This will give students a genuine audience and a genuine response.

Short-term exchange of teachers:
The project starts by teachers visiting each other’s schools to ensure the sharing of best practises, by partaking of workshops developing activities to motivate and encourage students to use their target language verbally. This part of the project sends four teachers to the host school on two separate occasions.
