Project Summary

VR in the classroom – an intercultural expedition to London from students for students.
Motivating students to engage with what they learn in the classroom, one has to take it up where they find it and use for today! Finally, experiencing learning differently, that has been the goal of our project. The participants wouldn’t just “speak” and “listen”, but develop, master, and build up skills and competencies.
The aim of the project was to further develop the students’ media skills through the use of VR goggles, mobile phones, tablets, 360 ° cameras, Etwinning, interactive boards and Google expeditions; as well as the development of language and social skills through the intercultural cooperation between the International High School Meerane and the Sandhurst School. The mentioned areas of competences have become an indispensable part of the everyday and professional life of our students. The planned project result was the creation of a virtual city tour through London, as an outcome of the mutual project meetings of the participating pupils from the partner schools. On the basis of a scavenger hunt, our students wanted to develop an expedition through London and explain, question and describe exciting places in teams. This expedition should have been bilingual and available to all users of Google Expeditions and motivate younger classmates to learn.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project could not be implemented in practice. All that was carried out, was joint training on Google Expeditions and Etwinning for the coordinating teachers of the English partner school from Sanhurst at the Meerane International High School, together its staff. The planned trips of the students and the associated creation of virtual end products with Google Expeditions could not take place.
Due to the corona situation and the related regulations at both partner schools, the project initially came to a standstill, even on a virtual level, at the beginning of the pandemic. After some “normality” had returned to the exceptional Corona situation, however, it was possible to resume contacts between the groups of pupils from both partner schools and to revive them via video conferences. The digital, linguistic and social skills of the students involved could thus be strengthened despite the changes. The interest in integrating digital technology into lessons and the possibilities of virtual realities has also increased among teachers in the long term. Through the corona crisis, the connection to the partner school has also been strengthened and future projects are being sought.
