Project Summary

This project marks the start of an intensive collaboration between the Andreanum Gymnasium (DE, Hildesheim) and the CSG Prins Maurits (NL, Middelharnis). The objectives of the project are: “intercultural learning; development of key competences; social dialogue; development of CLIL”. These objectives are achieved by setting up the project “Looking at two brothers, looking at each other” in which both schools participate with 32 pupils, 4 teachers and 2 coordinators during the course of 2 years. These pupils are involved in the exchanges and, in addition, a large number of pupils per school year are indirectly involved in the project. The motivation to choose this theme lies in the fact that the Netherlands and Germany are neighbouring countries which have many related issues and yet have all kinds of images of each other which may not or not entirely be correct.

The objective of ‘intercultural learning’ is given shape by conducting a theoretical preliminary study by teachers and pupils into the functioning of image formation and interculturality. The results of this preliminary research are incorporated into the assignments. The preliminary research is included in the curriculum in a Goethe module at the CSG Prins Maurits and a Seminarfach at the Andreanum Gymnasium. This embedding in the curriculum is long-term.

The objective ‘development of key competences’ is achieved by students carrying out research into perceptions of the other country, which develops critical thinking skills and promotes practical skills such as written and oral presentation. The competences are assessed by means of formative evaluation.

The objective ‘social dialogue’ takes shape through the development of a film as a result of the aforementioned research. The film is the starting point for the dialogue between the participating pupils of the different schools, between the participating pupils and parents and between the participating pupils and their fellow schoolmates. As a result, the dialogue has a large reach.

The objective ‘development of CLIL’ is an objective that mainly has to do with school development in both schools and with the competence of the teachers involved. By means of an external training in the preparation meeting, CLIL is put on the agenda in both schools and competence in CLIL is promoted. The elaboration of CLIL takes place within the project, namely in the way in which the assignment for pupils takes shape and in the way in which CLIL competences are elaborated and assessed.

Finally, the project “Watching two brothers, watching at each other” allows pupils to look beyond the superficial images about each other and promotes European citizenship. By incorporating these competences, this project not only has significance for the short term, but also for school, subject and teacher development in both schools in the longer term. The Andreanum Gymnasium and the CSG Prins Maurits want to perpetuate this relationship for the longer term.
