Project Summary

“We are in one boat – Be a good citizien – Strategies to overcome difficulties of integration into a new society”

The present refugees’ situation represents a critical challenge for quite a number of European schools concerning the integration of newcomers mostly with a migrational background into a new community. On the one hand our project aims at the development of a program that provides different helping systems to enable newcomers to participate in everyday processses at school and within a new society. Such a program will benefit them on their way of becoming a good citizien. On the other hand such a program provides an opportunity for homestudents to widen their horizon as they function as tutors in this program.
The participants of the project are conscious of the need that newcomers must be offered a helping program to be integrated easily.
So both teachers and students (aged 14+) involved in the project are motivated to get involved in activities that lead to a development of such a system. Our project focusses on fields that are not really dependent on language skills as they offer an easy access to reach the project’s goal. These fields are ART, MUSIC, ICT, SPORT and FOOD. Project activities aim at leading newcomers to the point that they get to know their new surroundings and feel at home.
During the project we will run through three phases including preparatory work that takes place in every partner school, four international meetings which are defined as testing phases of the developed system in each field and a third phase of dissemination and evaluation.
As a result the project presents a handbook which offers a transferable helping program for schools that face similar problems of integration. As an effect of a successful project the symbol of a boat referring to the project title will be created and displayed in every school in form of a wall picture. Thus the impact of our project appeals a wide majority in the school communities as well as teachers as they will profit from the developed helping program which serves as a guideline in integrational processes. Moreover it also appeals to homestudents as it makes them become aware of the neccessity to take responsiblity for the situation of newcomers in their surroundings. So the project embodies decisive items of living together in a democratic society as it provides ways to be as well as to become good citizens.
Longer term benefits and sustainable results will be made available via eTwinning, schools’ websites and different local media.
