Project Summary

The project Priatelíme sa s ekológiou = We are eco-friendly was based on the cooperation of two schools from different regions of Europe in the field of ecology. These were the schools: Jozef Cíger Hronský Elementary School in Krupina and Osnovna škola in Krapinské Toplice. The project took into the consideration the different types of climate, the inland climate in Slovakia and the littoral climate in Croatia.
Both schools provide primary education, they are schools of local importance, situated in the historic town of Krupina (central Slovakia, Hont region) and in the spa town Krapinske Toplice (Croatia, region Krapinsko – zagorska županija).
The main goals of the project included the ability to lead students to teamwork, improving students’ presentation skills and developing interdisciplinary relationships, connecting subjects in the areas of: Ecology, English, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Information Technologies. We also met other goals of the project: we contributed to the protection of the environment in both cities, developed the positive attitude of students towards the environment and improved students´ English language skills.
We carried out many activities: we performed a chemical analysis of water in both towns, monitored the traffic situation in Krupina, did research on light pollution in Krapinske Toplice, compared the state of green areas in both towns, planted 150 trees near Krupina and planted flowers and medicinal herbs in the garden of Croatian school, planted the alley of columnar hornbeam instead of the old plant trees because the were a threat to the environment, according to the pupils’ suggestions we made ecological bags to reduce the use of plastic bags in shops, we studied the process of global warming and waste recycling in both cities and schools, we worked together as Europeans and shared languages: English, Croatian and Slovak.
Our most beautiful final products include photo books Green areas in our cities during four seasons, a school garden and a beautified school complex in Krapinské Toplice, a forest area with planted trees near Krupina, 300 ecological bags, 3 recycling bins in each class of our schools, a common dictionary of environmental terminology in 3 languages, final brochure about the project, many presentations on ecological topics in Power Point: Green areas in our cities, Water areas in our regions, National parks in our countries, Orchids in Croatia, Protected animals and forest animals , Recycling in our cities, schools and families, Global warming, Climate change, Climate change in Slovakia.
We see the long-term benefit of the project mainly in the fact that we managed to positive influence of our students´ thinking in the field of environmental protection. The project has enriched the students and teachers of our schools, the inhabitants of our cities in many ways. It was a project of effective cooperation, full of mutual inspiration, understanding and helpfulness. Not only an international partnership has been established, but an international friendship has started as well. We would like to continue with Erasmus plus projects or E-twinning projects in the future.
