Project Summary
The purpose of this project is to respond to the collective needs of four European secondary education schools. Despite the fact that each school belongs to a different typology – Paul-Emile Victor secondary school is part of the REP+ program (high-priority education network) in the suburbs of Lyon and Sportmittelschule is a specialized school in the centre of Vienna – teaching staff reach the same conclusion: well-being at school is essential for progress and classes need to be taught in a calm school environment in order to be effective. Given that we, teachers and students, spend around 80% of our day at school, we want to improve our daily experience to facilitate optimal teaching and learning.
This concern is the fruit of classroom observations – adolescents have neither the knowledge nor practical skills to promote their well-being. In general, they are uninterested in their own physical and mental health and that of others. Moreover, they pay very little attention to the spaces in which they live and share – an environment that nevertheless has a direct influence on their well-being. To a lesser extent, peer relationships are all too often the source of conflict.
All these factors have an impact on academic success.
Our report is based on several clear indicators such as overweight students due to lack of physical activity, poor diet, difficulty in regulating emotions, excessive screen use and poor environmental practices.
We have observed these behaviours and are planning to bring change on a European scale.
We want to raise students’ awareness on the importance of respecting their environment, their own health and that of others by asking them the following four questions:
“How do you feel, how do you eat, how active are you, how do you behave?”
During the project, we hope to see positive progress in the responses given and thus improve our students’ well-being step-by-step, because despite our differences, we complement each other.
Our ambition is to pool our assets, practices and know-how and to help each other to overcome any hurdles by drawing on our mutual resources and objectives.
Each school has its own distinct competence not found in partner schools. Each country has different priorities: well-being and concentration in France, the respect of nature and everyday environmentally friendly behaviours in Germany, diet and physical activity in Spain and sporting activities in Austria.
We want to share our expertise and skills with each project stakeholder by first educating our own students to become ‘ambassadors’ in their own specialties and exchange ideas on eTwinnings and during mobilities, and by practicing educational activities and regularly monitoring the progress of each student.
Our current priority is to inform our students and change their habits. We want to raise the awareness of the individuals under our care and are dedicated to training educated, open and responsible European citizens. To this end, we plan to make our students local actors to ensure the success of the project.
We are striving to forge solid ties between our schools and cities through this project. We see this type of project as an opportunity for us and our students. The fact that this project is taking place on a European level is an added value for our schools and students; it effectively opens up Europe and promotes the discovery other cities, languages and demonstrates our cultural similarities.
We are convinced that well-being at school is a widespread concern among many schools. For this reason, we hope that the visibility of our project European-wide will raise the awareness of other schools concerning these issues and help them find the appropriate responses.
