Project Summary

About the Project

Serious illness in a family brings around many changes and uncertainties. When a family member is seriously ill, it does not affect just the person dealing with the illness but it affects all the family members. Naturally, the family member who is ill, require more attention and support, thus all the family members will need to do adjustments to find a new balance. Most of the times, the ones who are supporting the family are the ones who are left behind.

This project will be focusing on young people who deal with a serious illness within their family. A parent or a sibling needs to be supported through this rough time. The The Karl Vella Foundation , Prisms (Malta), Istanbul Avrupa Arastirmalari Dernegi (Turkey) and Zavid Anima Vita (Slovenia), work to provide emotional, psychological and social support to young people who are dealing with such situations. Through this project, these young people will be channeling their worries, anger, frustration, fears and other issues which are important to them. This project will be offering space for these young people to express themselves through the art of storytelling and drawing. Through this project, these young people will also have the support and motivation to tackle these difficulties and embed themselves in the meaning-making process which is vital for all adolescents.

This project will be also including Elderly who are residents in retirement homes. The young people throughout this project will be interviewing the elderly persons in the homes and ask them about the values which they see important. The elderly persons will talk about their experiences and how they overcame obstacles in lives. This will create a mentor-learner relationship which will have a twofold objective. The first objective would be for young people to express their feelings and the second is that the elderly will be given space where they can contribute to their community through their guidance.

The main objective of this project is to:
– Offer support to 80 young persons who are going through a rough patch in their lives due to a serious illness within their family.
– Offer a space for young people to express their emotions
– Use art and storytelling as a method of expression and coping mechanism
– Launch a mentoring programme between young people and senior citizens
– Create innovative online tools so that the stories and pictures produced will be used in schools and youth centers so that more young people can benefit from

As a result of this project there will be four intellectual outputs:
– Filming of interviews conducted by the participants to the senior citizens
– Let me Express Tool kit – outline of the session designed and delivered during this project
– Short stories with an illustration which will be created by the participants
– The website which will have the information about the project, the methodology used and the intellectual outputs

The results and the four intellectual outputs of this project will be used in Schools and integrated with the personal and social development in Malta, Turkey and Slovenia. The results will also be uploaded on SALTO toolbox and shared amongst PRISMA, European Youth Forum, Anna Lindth and Garage Erasmus which together they have more than 50,000 members. This project as a methodology will be using non-formal education together with methods used by counselors and psychotherapists.
